Well, I promised a few people I'd do somethin' like this. I don't actually recommend this way of, uh, doing things, it's just...what I do, which is not necessarily what you should do. See? It's nothing new, either...watercolours aren't as hard to control as most people think! xDRelated content

My watercolours are WHSmith's own brand. I'm not sure where you can get the solid ones 'cause I got mine out of a kids set full of wax crayons and stuff, but they still sell the tubes. Er...do they have WHSmiths in the USA?
I use sketchbook paper, I can't stand textured watercolour stuff. I'm not sure what brand I'm using at the moment...but so long as it's not too flimsy or shiny, I'll use it! C:

Oh god, I hate when people use childrens supplies. xDD It maked my art feel really inferior because I use expensive stuff and can't get the same effect. x) WHSmith....hmmm, I have never heard of that, but I will look for it.
Thanks for the info! I wanna give watercolors a try soon, your artwork is very good motivation.

now we know all your secrets!
no, seriously, thanks for doing this, it's always interesting to see the artistic process. I find it amazing how the whole painting changed once you did the blue and purple shading

I never knew you could get such nice results with watercolor, guess I don't try and use it enough XD
you must have alot of patience in your art with a more unused type of medium, at least with most art I see here on DA and thats an awesome thing to be able to do :> *favs* this was definatly interesting to read through :3

Marshroots In reply to Heilos [2008-01-03 02:29:42 +0000 UTC]
Thanks! Well, I resorted to watercolours a few years ago after having a hard time colouring with coloured pencil without making a grainy mess. xD And out of envy of digital artists, since my parents wouldn't buy me an art program. I used to look at all the stuff people could do with digital stuff and try to match it with traditional. If I had my way back then I probably wouldn't be using traditional stuff now, but now I just don't want to give up painting. xD

Welcome.
I was wondering a couple things, though -
1) Do you ever use pens to outline or do you always use pencil?
2) How long do you usually wait between steps (like....do you let the section completely dry before going on...or not?)?
3) When doing the background, how do you get so close without the character's colors blending with the background colors?

Marshroots In reply to risha [2008-01-03 23:09:03 +0000 UTC]
Always pencil, I suck with ink.
I just carry straight on, but my colours dry in around 10 seconds anyway. xD
I'm just really careful. C:

Do you know, It didn't even OCCUR to me to go over my lines again when I've been working with watercolour! Aahah, thanks for the tip : D
I love seeing things like this from my friends and people who's art I love, because it's so interesting to see their work process, their way of working, AND to gain a few tips along the way!
The only problem I see with them, is that some people take tutorial as = MUST DO IT EXACTLY THE SAME WAY AND COPY THE WAY IT'S DRAWN TOO, YAY, I'M GENIUS NOW! and that pisses it up for everyone >:c
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Marshroots In reply to nekophoenix [2008-01-03 02:18:32 +0000 UTC]
I had to do that from the start, 'cause the watercolour completely erases my lines half the time! xD
Me too!
Heh, yeah, I've seen that happen...but I don't really mind. I don't think the methods I use are unique or anything. Even when I see people using my exact character styles and stuff I just...wonder why the hell they'd want to. xD Style issues just don't bother me!

This is great ^^
But how do you stop the paper from getting waterlogged?
👍: 0 ⏩: 3
Marshroots In reply to Black-Pteri [2008-01-03 01:45:39 +0000 UTC]
Thanks!
I just don't use too much water at once, and colour little sections at a time. And if the paper starts warping I press it flat with my thumb or my shirt until it's dry, which doesn't take long. C:

Also, tape your paper down with masking tape around the edges to a surface like a desk or clipboard, that way the paper won't wrinkle while you're painting.

AmberStoneArt In reply to vampiremackenzie [2007-12-29 08:15:44 +0000 UTC]
I always tear mine when I do that... -_-; But, yeah, they made us do that in school, too.
What we used to do was soak the paper for 20 minutes, lay it on a board and then use an industrial stapler to staple it down. You let it dry overnight and then it's stretched like a canvas the next day. It helps to keep the wobbly stuff out, too. But, that's the old-school pain in the ass way... I just can't ever get the masking tape to stay down ... or if it does, I rip it or the color leaks under it anyway and ruins my border.

vampiremackenzie In reply to AmberStoneArt [2007-12-29 17:42:58 +0000 UTC]
Awww. Maybe a stronger tape then, it sounds like. :3

AmberStoneArt In reply to vampiremackenzie [2007-12-29 17:44:45 +0000 UTC]
I dunno. If I use a stronger one it rips the paper when I take it off. I just gave up on using the tape altogether. I needs no stinkin' borders! ^^ heh. I don't do watercolor much anymore anyway...

Buy good paper... and wait between coats or use a hairdryer. Good paper is the key, though, at least in my experience. ^^

AmberStoneArt In reply to Atalhlla [2007-12-29 08:08:20 +0000 UTC]
I think I remember her saying something about that a couple months ago. ^^ That's just my advice, though. It helps alot to have good paper when you suck at watercolor. When you get good at it then you can work on crappy stuff and still make it come out right.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Atalhlla In reply to AmberStoneArt [2007-12-29 19:48:03 +0000 UTC]
Definitely! I've also heard you can presoak the paper and then let it dry to avoid wrinkles while working with it. Like, wet the entire thing in a shallow bath then let it dry. Really need to try that, see if it works!
I need to do watercolors at all. They're so pretty, and I have some sitting around... :<
Staring at Marshy's art doesn't help...

AmberStoneArt In reply to Atalhlla [2007-12-30 04:27:38 +0000 UTC]
I know, her art is so pretty. o_o; Makes me want to try bigger watercolors again. I never know what to do, though. -_-;
Soaking the paper is a good way to do it, too. What we used to do in school was soak it, staple it to a board and then either let it dry or blow dry it and then paint on the board. Problem with that is that the board is bloody heavy!!! >_< Heh. ^_^ I have a picture that I never finished sitting on one of those boards just staring at me every day. It's about 2 feet by 3 feet so the board is the heaviest damn thing ever. [link] (I decided to take a pic and upload it to scraps)

Yer absolutely right about paper making a big difference! Sketchbook paper is just my preference, and I have a definate favourite make. Some's just too flimsy and some is too textured...I'd say you just gotta find what's right for you. And if you use a lot of water and big brushes then you're gonna really need proper watercolour stuff!
Heh, at my old school my teacher would have a bit of a fit if he caught me watercolouring without taping the paper to a board! xD Hey, I like your painting! I envy people who make watercolour actually look like watercolour, eh. xD

AmberStoneArt In reply to Marshroots [2008-01-04 20:30:08 +0000 UTC]
I used to watercolor on sketchbook paper back before I started taking classes. I really liked how they turned out, but they don't look so much like watercolor. It's so much fun to experiment with watercolor, anyway. ^^
Oh! O_O; Well, thank you very much! I was surprised you went to look at it. ^^ I envy people that actually know what to draw. I'm okay if you give me a story or something but turn me loose to doodle and I have nothing. That's why I love your dragons and stuff so much. They're stand alone and you don't have to explain anything about them.
