Description Star Trek has a hit movie and Star Wars has a crappy TV show... has the world gone topsy turvy?!

My thoughts on the new Trek Movie - it was awesome. Exceeded all my expectations, a great movie. But there is also sadness, since this movie also burns 40+ years of Trek history that I love. YES, the movie gives fans the bone that it's an alternative timeline and not actually changing history, but that doesn't matter. The Classic Trek universe (TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY) is dead. Paramount won't be going back to it. Imagine for all you comic fans, if they had cancelled the classic Marvel Universe when they came up with Ultimate Spider-man. Ultimate Spidey is great but...I grew up with classic Marvel U and I love it, even though lately it has gotten pretty sucky.

So while this is a great movie, I will still miss the real Star Trek. The movie's not without flaws of course... Nimoy felt to me to give the weakest performance of the cast, or of his career....Uhura was a totally useless character who added nothing to the movie...and overall it was all action with no real substance or meaning. But it was so good and so much fun I can look past the problems.

Go see it if you haven't!

The name of that movie is Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace (TPM). I can believe you about TPM's failue upon 3D re-release and I hope you are right that they will not bring another Star Wars film back to the big screen. If you are right like I hope, Star Wars' days are definitely numbered. Thanks for the watch that you gave in return. I had sufferend hardships that were done to me in the name of Star Wars such as the dark 20-week periond in 1999 when those around me took away my Orion II for my hating Star Wars. I am very angry at how the hormonally exciting eels known as Colo Claw Fihs are so horribly mistreated by having them tortured and eaten by Sando Aqua Monsters. Although I hate Star Wars, I am protective of Colo Claw Fish as demonstrated by fur of my deviant art photos.

Funny how you mention the Ultimate universe coming out cancelling the original timeline, and yet that's exactly what DC is doing now. Sometimes predicting the future sucks.

I hope they find a way to have Data in a Trek movie again.
His head was left on Earth in the past. If someone in the new timeline finds it and they build him a body then he will live again.
They may need to make him a new face if someone else plays him.
Data was always so cool.

I loved the movie too, but killing off a whole planet of Vulcans and altering forever everything. They could have made a cool movie without using a new time line, but then they would always be forced to stay in a narrow path that everyone already knew. You would always know the ship wont be lost, no one of the main crew could die. So how could they have the drama if you knew no one could be lost.
Now anything can happen and the future is unknown. This may have been the best way to go. The movie rocked and I hope they make more soon.

Indeed...it is very sad...but on the plus side, Star Wars has a massive comic book base and an equally massive, and still growing, collection of books that go much much deeper then the movies ever do, as well as nearly three times more video-games...

Star Trek is okay, but ultimately its just not likeable enough. You'll notice in Star Trek, that most alien races instantly know how to speak English or with very little know how, while Star Wars keeps it realistic in that retrospect. Sure, ST is considered to be more accurate in physics and whatnot, but it's just boring more times then not...

Don't forget how stupid Chekov sounded in the movie. It was horrible and my friend, who actually is Russian, despised the way they made his voice. It was a horrible and, though there is an accent, it should not be that ridiculous. Plus...Kirk is little more then a whiny punk in the movie. True its a growing up point...but he pales to the true Kirk.

Sorry...much longer then intended, but just know, you're not the only one who felt pain from the movie...which by the way, the plot-line sucked, I don't care if it was a multi-versial issue. It needed more work.

Well, in Trek they don't actually speak English, they have universal translators. In Star Wars most peopel also speak English actually (well, Galactic Basic)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GamerDruid In reply to MattMoylan [2011-06-11 20:47:34 +0000 UTC]

Meh...I won't argue with the translators. Those just seem too useful to and actually no, you'd be surprised how many aliens don't speak Basic. Most understand Basic, but many prefer, or are forced, to speak in their own language. For instance, the Wookiees and the Ithorians. Both can understand Basic, but neither have the vocal structure necessary. The Hutts too could speak Basic, but they have the racial distinction that the Hutts are Gods over normal beings (funny right?) so rarely do any Hutts speak more then Huttese. I don't want to go into a rant, but there are many creatures like those above I described that don't have the language ability. Plus nearly all of the aliens in Trek are humanoid. That just doesn't seem creative enough to me.

Eh...I would have to give you that. TV budget is very limited...or was very limited. They can do some pretty impressive stuff these days with cheap stuff, CGI being a huge forefront for that.

Apparently, your small little mind cannot conceive the possibilities of parallel universes. A parallel universe or alternative reality is a hypothetical self-contained separate reality coexisting with one's own.For you to say TOS, TNG, DS9, and VOY is dead is a very arrogant statement on your part. You need to read IDW Star Trek: Countdown before you make a statement like that.

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

GamerDruid In reply to kirk1701-e [2011-06-06 00:56:57 +0000 UTC]

It is partially true, but YOU also need to do your own study work. Parallel universes do not live within the current, existing universe. They branch out and form new universes from each new tide in time. In fact, everything you do in the world creates new universes in which those decisions never happened, or occurred in different ways and which have different results.

It's why its called a "multi-verse" because there are multiple universes out there, not just the one we exist in and, likewise, the story from the movie spawned a new universe, where it is possible that things never happened in the future or happened they will happen differently or have yet to happen at all.

Besides, I do not think that Matt was actually stating the above. I think he just meant that those series' are dead, as in they won't be revived, reworked or expanded on in the future. I'm pretty sure he did not mean that they never happened when this movie's timeline occurred, but it also a fair statement to say that it is possible that they won't.

Your post seethes with the arrogance you tried to correct with him, when there was nothing to correct. You need to better read what people are saying and learn to accept opinion, especially since the film makers have not elaborated on the future events of those series, it is a completely valid point of view.

In short, shut the lip and read his words for what they are, not what your "small little mind" sees it as.

Yes, I did see that part of the movie where they fall just short of winking at the audience. Though, the parallel timeline thing is only a theory put forth by kid Spock, otherwise nothing in the film shows the other timeline still in existence.

Either way, in the new timeline, (which is the only one that matters at the moment as there is no new media for the classic one) all of the later adventures do not happen.

PS: comic and book tie-ins don't matter. The movie and TV people don't give a crap about them, and will ignore them. they are not part of continuity, sorry.

The alternate reality was the new reality created by a temporal incursion of the Narada from the year 2387. Accidentally traveling back to the year 2233, Nero, the captain of the Narada, destroyed the USS Kelvin, killing George Kirk and Richard Robau. Spock arrived in the alternate reality in 2258 and was captured by Nero, who used red matter to destroy Vulcan. However, Nero's attacks united the crew of this reality's USS Enterprise years earlier, to foil his attempt to destroy Earth

FreakyZayin In reply to MattMoylan [2012-08-09 04:23:19 +0000 UTC]

Random reply from a random person one year later XD! But I got to write.

There is a TNG episode in which we see many many of these parallel universes. For instance, there is one in which the Borgs are destroying the Federation and Picard is still Locutus. According to this, there is therefore an infinite amount of universes within the Star Trek universe, which means that anything and everything happens. Hence, the universe we get to see in the series and movies is the "cool" one. That's based on a quantum physics theory to explain a weird quantum phenomenon, but it's an ugly theory if you ask me. All these universes would take too much space (and time XD)...

I don't remember the movie because I wasn't a Star Trek fan when I watched it, but I guess we could just happily decide the other timeline is still there somewhere. However, I must admit that the Star Trek writers are the biggest trolls in the universe. I feel like they enjoy making fans suffer. Just like they killed Data and didn't care to bring him back with B-4 =,=...

They redo the Marvel Universe every few years anyway, not to mention all the alternate dimensions, universes, worlds, and time lines. Yes, 44 years of Star Trek goodness was essentially retconned, but hey, a clean slate is better than nothing.

Uhura served as the "lovely object" (Ouran reference) for Spock. She wasn't totally useless. Here's an example of a scene she was inadvertently useful in.

Lol, that's awesome. I love how the Star Wars poster is all covered in cobwebs and the Star Trek poster is bright and dazzling. Everything about this is awesome, and I think Spock was the definitely the right icon to be gloating over Vader. I must myself admit that bypassing 40 years of Trekdom was alarming. I think though there was both good and bad in it. True, we lost a lot of great Trek canon, mostly from TOS, TNG, and DS9, but "preachy Trek" also kicked the bucket, which was long overdue. In a way, the two genres sort of traded places. Star Wars lost its excitement and freshness for cheesy dialogue and moralism, ie, "Anakin, I believe in the Republic, in democracy!" At least no Star Trek series could be accused of having dialogue as badly written as Eps 1, 2, and 3.

I mean, now Spock will never be able to ask his father to tell his mother that he "feels fine". I know it's an alternate timeline, but still...

i've only watched little bits of the film but the bits were pretty good once once you get the idea of the alternate timeline. What gets my goat is that this was written by the same guys (Kurtzman and Orci) as ROTF. You can tell where the priority was there and my hierarchy would be:

DS9- I can't see why people call it a babylon 5 rip-off
Enterprise
Voyager
TNG
TOS
