Description AVATAR Fan Art - Character - 3D Render

PLEASE COMMENT BEFORE YOU

Avatars are hybrids combined using the DNA of native Na'vi living on Pandora and Humans.

Avatars have some different anatomical features compared to the Na'vis. Avatar's have 5 finger hands instead of 4 finger hands.

Direct Maxon Cinema4D R11.5 render without any postwork.
M4 based 3D mesh using advanced morphs and other modifieres. I did some mayor improvements on the body and head morphs. Eyes, Nose and Ears are now Na'vi like. The body morph is adjusted. It was a challenge to get the Na'vi eyes. Believe me! Resolution is 2000x200 pixel but I can render it in any higher resolution.

Advanced and complex light and reflection setup.
Dont ask me about the render time!
Thanks to Messange-Bleue-Stock for the base texture [link]

A closeup showing the wireframe is here: [link]

Amazing! I can only imagine how hard it must have been to do this. I love his expression, and you really did a good job with getting him to look like a Na'vi in spite of the limitations. I must say that his nose looks a tad bit too human, the tip is basically a cat's nose, and it's generally a lot more broad than a human nose. Overall though, you did an excellent job!

Fascinating! I don't know very much about 3d rendering (and by "not much" I mean not at all ) so your work is really impressive. Can you move points on the wireframe to change its shape?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

mike-reiss In reply to Ja-Kitsu-Ryou [2010-01-15 22:50:18 +0000 UTC]

I could to that but you would have to wait years for the next version. There is a bone structure inside that body mesh. Just like in your own body. And I move the bones. And the body follows. There are other great things like morphs and deformers to get the mesh you want it to have. Then comes the university of textures and shaders. If that is done comes the multiversity of light and shadow. If all that is done you just have to hit render and wait a day or two... And your done!

Wow! Talk about a lot of work. I would lose patience pretty quickly.

He's looking great! I love the pose and plant element!
The face could look a little more feline, primarily the nose, and perhaps the eyes could be looking at the viewer but to the right perhaps. The torso could probably be elongated a bit more, but other than that brilliant! :3 And I want a cool loin cloth like that lol!

This one is amazing! And I didn't think it could get better from the last one ^.^

You have the anatomy perfect, and I love the light source, very beautiful.

I didn't notice that the avatars had five fingers. I wonder if the Na'vi find that weird.

Hey, it's a cool piece of art! The only thing I disagree is where you say nose is Na'vi like. Maybe the nostrils part, but it is definitely human, because Na'vi have their noses get quite wider close to forehead. And the Avatars in the movie had this feature taken from Na'vi, not from human genes as far as I could see.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

mike-reiss In reply to ademaris [2010-01-14 14:06:04 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for your detailed feedback!
I used reference images for the nose. It my seem a litte wider to the forehead depending on the lighting setup.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

aerilworks In reply to ??? [2010-01-14 13:56:33 +0000 UTC]

I like the lighting setup a lot, could you provide a little more details about it (if that's ok for you)? I haven't seen the movie, so I cannot say much about the body and face, but I think it looks great. Your eyes look fantastic, I really like the shader you used on them. Very bright and clear.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

mike-reiss In reply to aerilworks [2010-01-14 14:17:06 +0000 UTC]

It is a complex HDRI based light setup rendered in Cinema4D.
The 2000 pixel version needed 12 hours on a 4 x 3,4 GHz machine.
I dont mention all the test renders... But I am happy and proud with the result.
It was a way to get the eyes like you have seen on the movie poster. Believe me!
