Description AVATAR Fan Art - Character - 3D Render

PLEASE COMMENT BEFORE YOU

Avatars are hybrids combined using the DNA of native Na'vi living on Pandora and Humans.

Avatars have some different anatomical features compared to the Na'vis. Avatar's have 5 finger hands instead of 4 finger hands.

Direct Maxon Cinema4D R11.5 render without any postwork.
M4 based 3D mesh using advanced morphs and other modifieres. I did some mayor improvements on the body and head morphs. Eyes, Nose and Ears are now Na'vi like. The body morph is adjusted. It was a challenge to get the Na'vi eyes. Believe me! Resolution is 2000x200 pixel but I can render it in any higher resolution.

Advanced and complex light and reflection setup.
Dont ask me about the render time!
Thanks to Messange-Bleue-Stock for the base texture [link]

A closeup showing the wireframe is here: [link]

Please dont aks me!
The 2000 pixel version needed 12 hours on a 4 x 3,4 GHz machine.
I dont mention all the test renders... But I am happy and proud with the result.
It was a way to get the eyes like you have seen on the movie poster. Believe me!

whaoho! i've got a 4x3.2Ghz Cpu just out of curiosity is your cpu an AMD?

and those eyes looks so detailed. It gives the whole character a.... magical look? and what renderer do you use?

mike-reiss In reply to ShengDaFlashPRo [2010-01-14 15:10:12 +0000 UTC]

Yes I use AMD cpu's.
You need ram - a lot of ram to render this kind of 3d scenes...
I use Maxon Cinema4D. For 10 years now... It is still my favorite render engine!

yay AMD hi-5

Well when i render with Mental Ray, it rarely uses over 1.5GB of ram. thats a lot but my computer can handle it so all good

and you are really a fanboi of Maxon C4D!!! I'll probably never move to another engine either.

So you use 3dsmax right? and mental ray?
I have no knowlege about mental ray. It is a plugin to 3dsmax right?

ShengDaFlashPRo In reply to mike-reiss [2010-01-16 02:11:19 +0000 UTC]

no. i use Maya with Mental Ray. Mental Ray ships with both 3ds max and maya.
Though there is 'v-ray' which is a custom plugin for 3ds max (and maya) which most believe is superior.

I see.
By thinking about it. It might be that difficult doing hair like that in 3d. Difficult yes but acceptable. This hair setup is a little bit to rough for the Na'vi...

hair is never easy to do in CG no matter what type of hair. it's life (:

I think, the upper part of the body is too short, but it is really an awesome work. I love the face and the textures

Thank you! I am glad you like it.
This Avatar is based on a human M4 3D mesh. And it was a challenge to modify it that way.
With each version I get a little closer to the Na'vi...

Very nice work! The eyes must have been really tough, not only making them bigger but making the gaps within the head bigger to fit them and yet also make them seem as though they are natural... It takes a lot of skill to get it right if you know anything about anatomy, which I still don't (not enough anyway)

The only thing I have to say...is that Avatars have FOUR fingers, while Na'vi have THREE! Thumbs are not fingers...some people can't accept that huh?

Thank you for your detailed feedback!
The face adjustment and body adjustment to get a human 3D mesh in to an Avatar was a challenge...

I agree, 4 fingers, 3 fingers. Technically, you could also say 5 phalanges on the hand...

Gato-Nephist In reply to xelaalexNowOnWebtoon [2010-03-10 21:36:23 +0000 UTC]

Actually, you can also refer to the thumb as one of the fingers. Take a look here, for example: [link] .
(Also, there are languages such as English that make a distinction between the thumb fingers, and languages where there is no such distinction at all, so it's really not that obvious.)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

xelaalexNowOnWebtoon In reply to Gato-Nephist [2010-03-10 22:19:03 +0000 UTC]

I see, regardless physically they are very different. The thumb is opposable, and can be posed in numerous different angles, while the fingers are purely facing forwards. Also, there are 2 joints on a finger, and only 1 on a thumb. Whether they are called differently or not, they are very different.
