Hi ! you have been chosen by one of my ODD Account watchers to be in the spotlight !

Today's theme is dedicated entirely to the masses as they have sent me O.D.D. suggestions to feature.
ODDS (oibyrd's daily deviations) are to honor the sometimes overlooked artists of dA that I personally think deserve some exposure and also, to introduce the more popular artists to the new/overlooked deviants. I prefer to showcase ALL artwork that I love (and that includes popular artists) in order to create a non-biased feature of the talent on dA Please click the link below to see your work featured and to view other featured artists . If you prefer not to be a featured artist, just send me a note and I will remove you from the list. Cheers! Sandi xoxo

Again, your stuff is mind-blowingly cool. How do you hollow out your pieces, or are some of them solid?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

mudmonkey In reply to Whitness [2004-08-30 18:21:26 +0000 UTC]

very seldomly do i create anything that is solid. Sometimes in smaller pieces i'll have a solid arm or something like that. Most of the time i construct the pieces using coil technique- so it's hollow just because of the process. The smaller figures i allow to dry to a leather hard state- then i take the thinnest wire i can find and cut the piece in half (try to look for a place where i can hide the cut). then i just scoop out the insides and put it back together. I hope that helps.

i probably wouldn't have found out about this category unless i'd seen it on the DD feature in the sidelines....thanks for being so talented, hehe!

hey, thanks...i've been hoping for a DD for many reasons, not the least of which is that there are so few sculptors and sculpture gets very little attention....i was hoping it would inspire some other sculptors out there to post work...guess we'll see.

hey that's really cool. I love little things like that. there's a guy here in montreal who makes character sculptures too, they're so cool.

very nice work on this, the colors are nice and the character is very cool and original. too bad it's sold, I'd have liked him. good stuff

Haven't I seen this fellow in `jasinski 's paintings?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 2

mudmonkey In reply to inebriate [2004-08-08 00:08:28 +0000 UTC]

it seems that many have compared my style to Jasinski, which i take as a great compliment- i like his paintings quite a lot. It is certainly possible that there is a character in one of his paintings that resembles this one, but if you're asking if I copied him or was somehow inspired by a character of Jasinski's the answer is "nope". I created this piece in 2001-2002 during a residency at a museum, several years before i knew of DA or Jasinski.

Having said that, i should take this opportunity to share my feelings on "copying" other people's work. It's impossible to do anything that's "new"- somewhere out there, there is something similar to what you make- I've had many people copy my work (mostly former students of mine) and the reality is that no one can make your work, no matter how hard they try. I think people who get caught up in the whole "hey he copied me" thingy are just letting their fear run away with them (ie. the fear that someone will become successful because they have copied your work). I think if someone feels that they can do my kind of work, and they feel that they can do it better, they should go for it.

Most of the DA artists on here seem to be young (high school/college kids) and experiencing a time of life when individuality is extremely valuable. It seems that from that perspective it can be hard to think along the lines that i'm talking about. However, when i came to these conclusions (in art school) it made me a much less stressed out (and much happier) artist.

inebriate In reply to mudmonkey [2004-08-08 17:24:37 +0000 UTC]

Also, didn't mean to accuse you of stealing his work. I know you're better than that.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

mudmonkey In reply to inebriate [2004-08-08 17:56:54 +0000 UTC]

Don't worry, i didn't feel accused. I'm always happy when anyone takes some time to comment at all. And as i said before i don't dwell too much on the whole "stealing" thing anymore.

inebriate In reply to mudmonkey [2004-08-08 17:19:46 +0000 UTC]

I find it incredibly cool that the two styles seem identical but in different media. Am also very intriguied on how you came about with this fellow, but nonetheless, thank you much for your little bit there. It really opened some different ideas to me.

encore [2004-08-04 23:42:45 +0000 UTC]

I am AMAZED at how something like the description the admin made of this work could be on a site that claims to be all about ART. A 3D work that actually exists in real life? Huh... Wouldn't that be a sculpture? Or just because we are in the internet must we go on writing like nerds that know nothing more than what is made on the computer?

Well, what matters anyway is that this piece is very good. If jasinski was a sculptor, bet this is how his work would look.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

mudmonkey In reply to encore [2004-08-07 04:38:38 +0000 UTC]

i think they were just trying to make the point that most of the 3d images on DA are computer generated 3d images...categorizing sucks...it's so hard to find English words that don't have multiple meanings.

Thanks so much for your kind words, and taking the time to comment on the work.

Very creative. Not daily deviation worthy only because of the shadows. Work on your shadowing.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 2

mudmonkey In reply to Mouses [2004-08-07 23:55:11 +0000 UTC]

I'm not sure what you mean by "work on the shadowing"....could you be more specific?

The "shadowing" is created by light, because this is a sculpture- when you say "work on the shadowing" it sounds like you think it's a 2-d piece where i am able to change the shadows? The only way to change shadows on a sculpture is with light- and sadly i'm not a very good photographer (hoping to eventually be able to afford to pay someone who is a professional to shoot my slides).

I should add that i do appreciate that you took the time to try and find something wrong with the piece, despite the fact that you weren't able to put it into words that make sense.
