--overall tips:--1. please don't just smash together the colors of the parents like in the top left!
2. blending + mixing colors helps create an original color scheme!
3. markings are okay if they're used correctly!
4. carbon copies and simple fusions of the two parents are discouraged!
5. deviation from the parents' talents and interests is a good way to go!

after seeing flashlight foals that all look the exact same, i wanted to try to help people make more original and logical shipping babies. so tada!!

Just because Starburst has her father's coat colour and her mother's tri-coloured mane doesn't make it bad. In fact, it's entirely plausible. She has her own cutie mark and a name that goes with the theme of her parents. And also, she's not an alicorn.
My next gens, there are alicorns because in my headcanon, Alicorn genes are more dominant than the other three species as it has the most concentrated magic.
Ki is a very good Next Gen maker, she knows how genetics work and makes each character their own and not just a copy of their parents.

If you made the wings gradient and maybe removed the horn colour, then it would be majorly improved. Just a suggestion though, you don't have to follow it, I like her colours and her mane style.

I only use Ms Paint, so it's very difficult to use gradients. This is the closest I can get to one-->

Try using the scatter (?) brush and the transparent select feature. It's hard to explain, so I'd recommend looking up videos, but it's very easy once you know.
And she looks so much better! But still cute ^>^

Oh... I've been doing it all wrong! I'm sorry! I really honestly don't know how pony next gen works, I don't know if you would either have just an equal amount of both parents' genes (EX. Twilight's coat color, Flash Sentry's main mane color, Twilight's purple and pink highlights, and the fact that she is a Pegasus with any recessive genes coming from other relatives) Or a mixture of each of them.

it's ok if they don't have correct genes, i'm pretty sure that would take a lot of science and observation and stuff! just make sure that they're not carbon copies of the parents and they have a few original traits

I really do not like when they have the same color as the parents. I also dislike when the name is pretty much just a mix of the two names.. I don't think parents mix their names to get a "original" name.

yeah exactly!! all the pony families that we've seen in the show have original names for their kids and have differences, even the apple family: they share similar mane/coat colors and apple names but they're still totally different :0

This is confusing i dont get how coat colors can be transferred to eyes and mane/tail.... For example sweetie belles pink in her hair could be Recessive genes.... but idk

I've seen so many people make shipping foals to have their parents' colours in splotches on their body and have heterochromial eyes, which are the eye colours of their parents. It's insane how much people do this, but I'm glad you made this clear. And for an example, I had made a fanfoal for a ship I have with my friend, who has some good resemblance of who her parents may be.

They kinda matter when you make OC's who are offsprings of another. Too many people make their OC's look like carbon copies of the parents. Like real life, offsprings bear resemblance to their parents, but they aren't carbon copies. Sure, this is fictional stuff, but making characters with obnoxious clashes of traits like the one used for example in the picture and make them OCs is nothing but unoriginal and uncreative when it comes to having no thought put into the characters.

Ummm... I don't want to be hateful but coats don't work like that.
A mare and a Stallion both carry Dominant and Recessive genes. Dominant is what shows, and Recessive is what they carry anyways.
Twilight should have had either white or blue coat, because of her parents Dominant genes, but both her parents (Apparently) had a Recessive Purple gene, which is why her coat is purple. So, the foal of Flash and Twilight would have either a Purple or Orange coat (Shades may warry) unless they both carried a Recessive gene of some other color, in which case the foal would have the coat of that color.
Also, genetically speaking it is completely possible for the foal of an Alicorn and a Pegasus to be either a Unicorn, A Pegasus OR an Alicorn, but since Twilight BECAME an Alicorn, we don't know if she actually carries a gene for that.
