Wow, I Just Got Referenced To This, And My Past Trials With Making Lightsabers Have Not Been Pleasing, But This One Actually Worked.
I Just Need To Ask How You "Round" The Tips.

Hey there.. glad u found my tut useful.. in fact, not being satisfied by any other options around here is what drove me into making this one myself..
As for rounding the tips, I usually create the basic shape using the pen tool, creating four nodes and adding a fifth in between the ones on the tip, drag it upwards a little and make it bezier.. just a little, so that it doesn't look straight but neither completely semi-circular, more like the tip of a steel sword.. i take it you know how 2 use the pen tool?
i hope i helped you out.. should you have any further questions please ask, it is no problem..

Actually, I'm Not Too Advanced With Photoshop, So I Have No Idea How To Use The Pen Tool. I Never Actually Needed It Until Now.

Well it's a pretty handy tool.. it creates vectorial shapes (as the ones in illustrator) and then they get rasterized..
I don't know how 2 explain u other than tell you to play around with it for a little.. you may find alt-clicking while clicking on one of the points you create with it and dragging makes for curved lines.. i think there must be a tutorial around here regarding that stuff.. i'd make a little one 4 you.. but unfortunately i don't have the time right now as i am on a freaking deadline..

Already knew how to do this, but I think this is the better of the LS tuts on here. Shame it's not higher on the browse results.

well, yeah, i tried to get a different look than most around here, going on the easier path of putting some outer glows and stuff which don't really take the properties of light into an object such as, well.. a LIGHT saber.. if you know what I mean .. Anyway, I'd love to be higher up on the list, but I'm happy with the little amount o' people who tell me they used my version and show me their results..
btw, thanks 4 ur kind words..

I've just now logged in to dA and saw your comments.. sorry I didn't reply any sooner, but i was kinda busy.. The saber looks awesome! I love seeing people accomplish things with such simple steps which make glowing stuff look cool instead of simple outer glows.. Very nice Modeling BTW..

For the red one, I adjusted the 'shadow' by +50 as well; it made it redder, more like the ones in the films.
Great turorial!

nico89-fx In reply to azraphon [2009-02-03 18:03:56 +0000 UTC]
yeah.. i know it's the one that tends to look less like the colour it's supossed to be.. I sometimes give it a little magenta to make it brighter, as the shadows make them look a little flat. but all this is relative, maybe in a particular shot you need to have some "overdone" colours for it to show up (as in light backgrounds) Anyway, this is meant to be used as you did, adding your own personal touch.. so i'm really glad u liked it & found it useful..

Awesome method, very nice. I've been playing with other styles for a RP saber blade that isn't standard jedi-make, but I think this is by far simpler and I'mma have to use what works XD

I was afraid of that... I haven't exactly found a 3d modeling software I can use yet.... Do you happen to have a link to that tutorial?

You may try Gmax, which is a freeware version of 3d Studio MAX, a professional's choice, yet expensive and complex.. anyway the freeware is way easier.. check it out here: [link]

OMG thank you, but I have a question, you know how to do silver or Yellow?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
nico89-fx In reply to XunZaer [2007-06-30 08:35:37 +0000 UTC]
for yellow, you should put the midtones slider for yellow to -100 and the hightlights of yellow between -50 and -100.. of course it's personal preference.. since the yellow sabers are Expanded Universe one's, we don't know exactly how they look.. but that's what you gotta do for them to look really yellow.. if you want a bit more of an orange hue, try the green and red sliders for midtones and highlights, not very high values..
according to the silver one.. i suppose you mean the Kotor like saber.. it's the only one like that i've ever seen.. it's just the same as any other, excepting that it's not color balanced, or it's color balanced using very low values for every midtone and highlight slider..
if you've got any troubles with this, just tell me.. hope you get the results you want..
NICO
