Description
This animation is a depiction of the evolution of the uniforms worn by the NHL's Buffalo Sabres.1970-1977: The Sabres enter the NHL wearing blue, gold, and a logo that spells their name out in symbols.
1977-1978: The sock stripes thin out.
1978-1980: The socks again change, and the logo is now on the shoulders as well.
1980-1983: Another minor sock change coupled with a slight shift in the shade of blue.
1983-1987: The collar is rounded out and the stripes change yet again.
1987-1996: The sock stripes change for the fifth consecutive time.
1996-2000: The Sabres move to a new arena and decide to completely revamp their image, introducing red, black, silver, and the "Goat Head" logo.
2000-2001: The Sabres use a red alternate featuring, well, sabres.
2001-2002: The Sabres wear a special "New York" jersey against the Rangers in honor of 9/11.
2002-2006: The one-time special jersey is retired.
2006-2007: The Sabres return to blue and gold (and silver), but their new logo, quickly dubbed the "Buffaslug," becomes the subject of ridicule. The new uniforms feature small numbers on the uniforms, a completely new idea that is soon imitated across the league. To appease fans unhappy with the Buffaslug, the Sabres introduce a throwback jersey- with the front numbers, for good measure- but interestingly enough wear it with the normal navy blue pants and helmet.
2007-2008: The switch to the RBK Edge system doesn't affect the Sabres, but they do ditch the throwback. For the Winter Classic, they wear uniforms based on their classic design.
2009-2010: Still trying to appease fans angry with the Buffaslug, the Sabres introduce a modernized version of their classic uniforms using the current colors and RBK Edge cut.
2010-Present: The team finally gives in and the Buffaslug is retired; the alternate becomes the primary. To honor their 30th Anniversary, a new uniform inspired by the old Buffalo Bisons is worn as an alternate and proves to be extremely popular.
