Description
A new and improved fur tutorial, yay!I chose to start in black and white and add color later in the hopes that it would make it easier to see what was going on with the fur texture.
Though I used a wolf as an example, this is really just a method, and could be applied to any animal or length of fur.
I'm using Photoshop CS, though I imagine it shouldn't be too hard to adapt this to other programs...
I am also assuming that a tablet will be used, and that the opacity and size sensitivity would be ON for all of this.
I followed [link] very closely as a reference....
And the kitty eyes came from -

I thought at first that this was one of those cheap tutorials, where people get a photo from online, and just color over it, until eventually they just take the original photo and then lower the opacity...so that it's still there, but it looks drawn.
Your picture looked so realistic..and then I downloaded it..and realized it wa sjust really well done. Beautiful work.

Wonderful tutorial the details are amazing, but i tried it using a white wolf and it didn't work and instead remained the same is there another way to do the fur of a white wolf while still using this method?
Thanks!

for whites, all your base colors have to be much lighter than the way these start out.. and in an almost pastel range of colors. you'd then start layering your white (or almost white, depending) hairs over that. :}
...but yeah, you couldn't start as dark as this one XD

Thanks so much for this.
I decided to try my hand at it even though I'm very much in the beginning stages. It was fairly easy to follow even though I don't really know what I'm doing.
I'm happy with how it turned out. [link]

I still use the tips I learned from your original fur tutorial, but I think when I next get around to doing a serious animal portrait, I'll refer to this - it's more comprehensive than the first and I love that it shows the progress of the whole image. It's also much more forgiving since you're keeping the values and colors separate, so mistakes can be fixed on one or the other with ease. Thank you!

What size canvas do you normally use? (I think one of my main problems is i'm using too small of a canvas)

You are like the god of coloring. O_o
I mean seriously, wow.
I will have to try this... I wonder If I could take one of my charcoal drawings and use it as a "base"?
Then add to it...
Great tutorial! Unfortunately, I don't think anyone can make a drawing look more real then you can.
