here we are, tips on Text

sorry I keep skipping death, I think it's best until there's more deaths in my nuzlocke until I feel comfortable discussing death in detail.

- Font, No check... But I know a guy, who knows a guy, who knows a- Okay... I'm stopping... But I know a guy who had this... Way with having good fonts.

- Typing or Handwriting... CHECK! This time I'm surely going with Typing, my Handwriting sucks

- Have a good balance of shortness and longess when talking... I still haven't started

it doesn't have to be something fancy, just pick one that is legible and easy on the eyes while being able to fit in bubbles.

handwriting ends up a huge extra chore to pull off legibly, typing is best approach.

there's not really a direct way to start this beforehand, just keep it in mind when drafting pages.

Nice one, as usual! Let me suggest a classic site for fonts, too: www.blambot.com/

I'd like to know your thoughts on "all caps" fonts. It's a personal pet peeve of mine, but for regular dialogues, it irks me not to be able to tell real caps apart (as in proper names, etc).

ah thanks, and oh ho, super.

all caps should be for title and sound effects only, it's odd to read. course, it removes the worry of not capitalizing at the right times ( I tend to be bad at this in my dialogue) , but it doesn't look right to me. it depends on the type of all cap font, but almost all the time I don't like it

What's your opinion on Comic Sans? Just curious because it's not with the bad font examples.
Did you mention yet that you should always write a first draft of the dialogue in the sketching phase so you can be sure that there is enough room for the characters in the panel? (I can't check because I'm on my phone and everything loads too slowly. xD)

Do you like my handwriting? QAQ

it's so universally hated I think everyone already knows to stay away from it.

I mentioned that you should pre plan your wording since you'll have to make the bubbles and art around the bubbles yes, just said it in a different wording and probably could have emphasized that point more.

for the most part it's pretty solid. letter style is consistent, size is mostly consistent, and they are both centered and keep pretty straight save for the rare slanted line of text now and then. In dialogue bubbles you have the ocassional jumping or dropping letter (one that goes out of the alignment a bit) in words, but nothing too major. your style in handwriting though doesn't lend to boldness though, so it can be hard to read in instances like pg 16 where you have it standing alone in a panel saying "it grows very very fast" , though this is also partially due to odd choice in outline colors ( orange is a bit too bright and not enough contrast with white for an outline) . the instance on page 16 too when he's thinking "she amazing. maybe if...." also lacks a bit of definition, though not as bad at the "very very" fast earlier.  Overall I say there's no problem and just stick to handwriting since it's been part of your pages from the start, that's an important thing to consider as well, you want the reading of the comic to feel consistent, nothing says "oh my whoa whoa" like suddenly changing the font from one page to another in the dialogue.

Hopefully. xD

Ahhh thanks for the extensive critique! c:
I totally see those two examples. That page was made while I was switching laptops and also partially on one with a very badly adjusted screen. Now that I got used to the new screen it looks hard to read for me, too. xD
I'll see what I can do to improve bold writing. And don't worry, I'd never switch to typed text. When I made the first page, I tried a dozen fonts and everything looked horrible because that regularity doesn't mesh with my ~delicate~ lineart. Seeing comics with nice handwriting always makes me happy. ^^

no problem, another thing I noticed is that the letter that tends to fluctuate in size the most in dialogue is "O" so just a heads up. oh yeah, I know how that is, I've messed up several palettes before because I was working on my laptop that adjusts the screen dim based on day time, great for the eyes but sucks for coloring.

heh, that's a good point, and yeah, it's nice to see, as it's hard to do right consistently

"O"s are hard. I shall not give up on them so easily anymore! :'D
Aching eyes or icky coloring - choose wisely. ouo

OddPenguin In reply to Krisantyne [2013-07-24 20:38:57 +0000 UTC]

how do cheerio's make O look so easy to be the same size. and heh, I can have both, just got to set up the palette library when it's not dimmed, then I can just color with that library when it is dimmed

. . . . . and for me, it's spelling thats my problem, im always asking Tard or Google.com if my spelling are correct, but i know ALOT of my stuff is still wrong

heh, that's a different matter, though it's always fixable later on if you end up getting the willpower to do so

I am totes guilty with having problems on making my "short" dialogue fit in a balloon (meaning the balloon don't have space). I believe you can share a link to those peeps who want to get a variety of fonts to make them fit their comic:

(www.dafont.com/)   if no one has no clue what it is yet. There are new fonts all the time.

I think there's one more I just want to babble out there now that we're on the topic of fonts, people who obsessive enough also add to those how seamless the font would look like to the rest of the comic. Y'know-- even the dialogues itself should fit the mood and atmosphere of the rest to make it less of sore thumb. I'm still working on that. Picking an appropriate "intelligent" script font is kinda difficult

OddPenguin In reply to Carminadelic [2013-07-24 13:46:46 +0000 UTC]

heh, added it to the description. there's actually a ton of free fonts here on deviantart too, though the font styles here tend to be more gimmicky.

yeah, you don't exactly want digicube font in a prehistoric set story, keeping in mind the atmosphere should be a factor in choosing font is a good notion.

Carminadelic In reply to OddPenguin [2013-07-24 16:32:04 +0000 UTC]

Yes indeed. Most of my fonts are from that site, with my top favorites being the one's that look a bit better than Comic Sans (like Gilles' Handwritten and Key's Comics). But yes, the general tone, style and mood of my story kinda clashes with any of the fonts I have so...

I'm done with trying to determine which available font will be nice. So in the end I just decided to use my custom (read handwritten) font for future Duality entries (and probably make a new one for the next).

You can actually make a "unique" font out of your own, by choosing what letters and symbols and stuff you want included and whipping them up in your own style. It's even more fun if you can make an entire made-up language out of this (I made one called Arcean Fae. Wanna see the shiz?)

8D Give it a try!

OddPenguin In reply to Carminadelic [2013-07-24 18:53:34 +0000 UTC]

yeah, unique font making isn't too hard, but making it a respectable font and  not just a design gimmicky font is hard, it seems like it's all been done in fonts for practicality.

handwriting is the best way to ensure it's a fitting tone, as you tend to handwrite in similar ways to how one linearts. just takes more work since you have to center it by hand and keep it consisntent in size by hand.

ah, language making is cool, sure, show me via note or something .3.

I'll have to make my own font anyway for school in time, but before I make my own font I'd like to have the help of more typography class knowledge under my belt, so not until I have that class
