Description
Goddess of Winter and all that comes with it. Unlike the other Seasonal Horae, Khione is not their sister. She is actually the daughter of Boreas, the North Wind. She is the bringer of the cold weather and brings snow to the mountains and northern regions. Her gifts leave to rot all that was not harvested, to fertilize the earth during the winter season. She also decorates home by lining the eaves with icicles and frosts all around.Khione is not well depicted in Greek art; There is only two classical depictions of her, and both are off exhibit in the National Museum. Speaking as an archaeologist I have a personal opinion that Khione was brought in later to the sacred stories, as winters in Greece became more apparent. She is clearly not a deity mentioned in early art and literature. Anyway, with no really good source to draw from, I had free will and artistic expression to go with. Clearly blues and whites were the colors: The trim on her himation (which I bundled her in) I picked from a painting of Demeter. The trim on the horn comes from a find from Tinos, which I restored here. I gave her a rather young look and simple ribbons in her hair. The Horn and Ice Crystal is of my own creation. The shield in the back I decorated with Khione's father, Boreas.
