Description
GIMP is the main program I use for editing textures. I wanted to make a tutorial on fixing 'invisible' textures in GIMP so you can edit them easier. This helps with both Mass Effect and Dragon Age face textures which usually look 'invisible' in GIMP. This is because of their Alpha Layer which this tutorial shows you how to remove. So you will have an easier time editing the textures to customise a character.
However this can be used for removing any alpha layer on any texture. I just use it for mainly face textures from games that use an alpha layer. As it really does make editing things much easier.Β

Oh goodness, thank you SO much! I use Gimp and I HATE when any model has their skin textures being "invisible" or "transparent", resulting in me just ragequitting and wondering how the hell the original people managed to work with it.

Thanks forΒ the tutorial Padme. I'm not using Gimp, but it is always handy to know this kind of stuff!
BTW, I suspect the alpha layer contains a tint mask (at least for the DAI face textures) which can be used to apply a skin tone to the face texture. That means it could be useful to save the alpha layer as a separate file and then apply it to a color layer used to apply the skin tone.

No problem and you're right the alpha layer is the tint mask for the skin. Personally though I find it doesn't give the same effect as simply filling the layer with the colour (as the DAI tint mask doesn't effect the mouth. With Mass Effect I believe the alpha layer was in fact the spec as well as the tint mask.Β

Yes, you're absolutely right The alpha layers are used for the skin tone, tatooes, hairs and etc.
