Description Who would have EVER thought Marty would have made a tutorial?
Well. CERTAINLY not me. ._.

I was bored, and I got asked quite a few times how I make my linearts so crisp and good looking. So, since I'm tired of linking a crappily done screenshot, I made this tutorial for everyone.

What the heck, this should have been about the lineart only and instead I started explaining stuff and stuff. If you have questions, feel free to ask. My English is still far from perfect

Mind this is my first tutorial, and I'm not a master of Photoshop yet. But I do know how to use what I've got so far.

What else can I say? If you want to learn more about this program, then keep reading, reading and reading tutorials. This is how I learned ALL I know. And obviously, keep messing up with your program. The results can be quite great!

The next tutorial will be either about the colouring, or the shading. But WAIT for it. |D

Thank you so much for this! The texture trick has already improved my sketching/lineart already. Also, the massive size trick is pretty nice. :3

You're really welcome! I'm glad it helped you x3

Also, another trick. Try using FireAlpaca. That program is a mix between SAI and PS, and the lines are A LOT smoother than photoshop. Also, you can get fantastic lines even at small canvas sizes.
(Also the program is 100% free)

I've never tried SAI, what exactly is that? I've only recently started dabbling in digital art after a 5 year hiatus, so Photoshop/CS5 is the only thing I know.

..also, free sounds great, I'll give it a try tomorrow or so. :3

It's Paint Tool SAI, a fantastic program created specifically for digital drawing. Better than photoshop for most artist, though I still prefer my dear PS.

Yesss you should try that. The interface is very user friendly and although the program's quite simple, it's all an artist needs for practicing and cell shaded work, even comics.

Is there a way to save this brush?
: D Love this tutorial.

Yes, once you're done with setting up your brush, there's a small arrow on the upper right part of the brush window. Click 'New brush preset', give it a name, and you should be done. <3

Thank you for this! I love using the paintbrush tool vs. the pencil tool for line art, but it's never crisp enough to color efficiently. This method ought to help a ton.

pandalecko In reply to Saokymo [2011-08-07 09:51:09 +0000 UTC]

No problem!
I'm glad I could somehow help out. The pencil tool is just something I hate using, so I had to find something else to get a crisp lineart

Little thing I found... you REALLY put deep things into those strokes... I mean, textures and shizz :U I only use textures for big things, gawd /shot

Btw, when are you gonna see those scraps you told me to upload? well, if you haven't before of course

depending on the size canvas I use which usually is about 8.5 in X 11 in. the lines usually turn out lovely when I use a size 8 brush,
and thanks for the tutorial Marty >:3

PatiLee [2011-07-25 17:01:57 +0000 UTC]

Nice. But I think it also depends on which program you're using. I usually use 5 pixel brush +/- 2 pixels but I can never make my lineart so smooth as yours.
