Description
Welcome to a new series here on DeviantArt: Stuff From My Sketchbook. I will be scanning and coloring things I drew to kill time, interspersed with other, more finished work. What we have here is a military transport helicopter from a World War 2 Superscience setting, something along the lines of Hellboy, Luft '46, or Silent Storm, but more practically oriented. Real Helicopters, of course, didn't see widespread use until after the war.
I didn't give this a name or designation, but it would
probably be something on the lines of H-1 or CH-1 (both of which were used in reality for later models) and since Army Helicopters are named for Indian tribes how about "Seminole". The design is based on the B-25 Marauder bomber, as well as the much newer V-22 Osprey. The rotors here don't tilt significantly, rather they provide lift and thrust like a conventional helicopter. Having two rotors eliminates the need for a tail rotor, so I assume it handles some other maneuvering issue.
I had too much fun thinking up cammo schemes, and even now I keep thinking up more. WW2 camouflage was much more colorful and distinct than modern patterns, even if maybe it wasn't as effective. For the early and late war models from ETO I used the same logic as allied bombers; Olive drab and simplified markings give way to polished aluminum, colorful insignia, and nose art as allied air superiority made concealment less important (for aircraft at least). The navy chopper uses the same blue and white as carrier planes in the PTO, while the Marine Raider variant uses the all black pattern from P-61 night fighters, presumably for covert insertion of a raiding squad behind Japanese lines.
Overall this was a lot of fun, I should do it again soon.
Pencil sketch colored in Photoshop.
Enjoy,
~D
