Description
About the MOCThis is another MOC that happened kind of by accident or on a whim. After seeing 's Grind Star I was inspired to use my Dark red and black Marbled/gradient parts to make something. The end result became a chopper style motorcycle. I suppose thinking about how the wheels come from the Furno Bike or Speeda Demon 's motorcycle is what led me to go the direction of a chopper. I started with an initial idea for the front forks which turned out very well.
Then I spent three days on the rear wheel. I didn't illustrate it here in the photos but when you turn the rear wheel, a series of gears connected to the turntable part on the other side make the hub/rim counter rotate. So if this chopper was roaring down the street the back rim would be spinning the opposite direction. This is probably one of the most complicated pieces of functional design I've ever created. I spent three days just working on this section alone. I first got it, then I spent two days refining it so that the turn table and rim were closer to the wheel. Check out a video of the rear wheel in action here .
Now I had sort of a back and a front and had to bridge the two. I struggled with this until I finally scrapped the front fork design keeping the ideas I liked(like the Pyrox mask and the Piraka feet ), doing a lot of research by looking up many photos of the key areas of a chopper to really understand how they work and build the MOC like an actual chopper(i.e making the frame, then connecting the forks, building the engine, transmission, gas tank, etc).
This was quite an interesting build in the sense that it's both symmetrical and asymmetrical at the same time. It was a lot of fun chunking through this build one actual part of a motorcycle at a time. I felt like one of the guys on those chopper shows like Orange County Choppers or Biker Buildoff that used to be popular on The Discovery channel.
This is the first MOC of mine to really benefit from me moving my laptop into my MOC room. I relied heavily on photo searching google to look at the different aspects of choppers. Looking back on it I realize I went for a "simplified realism" approach. The chopper features things like head and tail lights, license plate, gas tank with spout, brake controls and brake lines on the handle bars, functional drive line(wheel connected by Technic chain to "transmission" which is connected via belt drive to motor), engine with fuel line and semi-realistic foot controls(clutch). Though I didn't get too obsessed with the details. I thought about adding things like gauges and other technical bits, but felt they would have distracted from the simpler edgier look of the bike. Thinking back on it, the license plate is probably a bit much as well.
I got the idea to call it Cerberus fairly early on, but the reason for it changed about midway through. Initially I was going to call it Cerberus thinking that it would figuratively have three heads, the Pyrox mask on the front wheel, the Kalmah head as the gas tank, and the rider's actual head. However several other head pieces were added as I finished out the build. So now I count the pyrox head and the two wolf heads on the handle bars as its "three heads."
For those of you who might not know, Cerberus is a rather famous figure in ancient Greek Mythology. He is typically depicted as a three headed dog with serpents all over his body, though modern depictions show him mostly as three headed dog of some sort. The serpents don't tend to stay. Cerberus guarded the gates of Hades to keep anyone from escaping. The Twelfth trial of Hercules was to subdue Cerberus without the use of any weapons.

Thanks. I'm glad it brought a smile to your face.
I doubt they'd make this a set, too many unusual connections and angles. But yeah it'd be cool if their motorcycles in Hero Factory weren't so damned lame. That's because HF is targeted to younger kids and a more involved model would be too much for them. That's why guys like me MOC though to get the satisfaction of a build ourselves.

Sadly, over the last year or so I've come to learn that Lego doesn't give two shits about anyone interesting in constraction sets(like Hero Factory or the Ultra builds) because we're outside of the target demographic. So what we get is what we get. At least most of the parts are good. Its just that they tend to come bent because of the packaging.

Yeah, it's sad. In my case, I long to find ways of making my own toys... which never go out of production because I'm the one making them. But because I lack the parts, I turn to things outside of LEGO to slightly achieve my goals. This motorcycle build just struck my high interest because one I like motorcycles, two bad boy bikes are a common theme that I apply to my fan fiction Life of Lewa...sometime near the middle of the series which I haven't yet written, and this specific model and color combo really inspires me because it made me think of the villains from my fan fiction who sometimes ride motorcycles, depending on the character. I also have a good character named Erozion from the series, and he's a biker, but not a bad guy; and because he's a biker, but I lack LEGO parts to make a motorcycle, I turned to what I had on hand (K' Nex parts) and got this Ero Ride Β

I see. Well I don't see lego going out of production as a whole anytime soon. So lego is a good investment. That's why I dump what little money I get into it. Cause I can make it stretch further than any other interest, and if you ever get bored of your legos you can just put them away and take them out later, or maybe someday pass them onto your children.

Sufficeth to say, it's a good thing you weren't my opponent in the vehicle category, we wouldn't have even had to post our entries, you would have won automatically XD. Ooh, nice design with the HF shield and Phantoka launcher, they blend together well. That front wheel using the Piraka feet is interesting, it looks great. The head lamp, imo, should be blended somewhat more into the *insert name of whatever the heck that part of the motorbike is*, it seems to pasted on. I really wish I could deliver a better critique, but I'm having a hard time finding anything else that you could improve upon.

Plague-Doc-Matteo In reply to CoconutFanatic [2014-02-22 21:38:13 +0000 UTC]
Technically no because the theme was Vehicle with no wheels so I would have been disqualified with this entry. But I did have my own solutions to the challenge. I thought of something that moved like a caterpillar where it scrunched and expanded, and something similar but based on microbiology. A MOC where it had a flagellum, a little whip like thing that it flings out and pulls itself along. Then there's the crab method, I want to do that anyway. Figure out a crab walking mechanism but take out the wheels underneath and supply the power from two M motors. Then hypothetically it would be a tracked based steering system.
Thanks Teri. I'm not sure what part you're saying should be blended more. Are you talking about the headlight or the Pyrox mask as a fender? If its the headlight, they stick out on choppers like that. static.ddmcdn.com/gif/scooter-β¦ See?Β From what I gather, that's the case. There just isn't much to critique on this one. You're actually the first person to give any kind of critique about it. Which is fine. I was wondering what kind of feedback I'd get but its all been exceptionally positive feedback.

CoconutFanatic In reply to Plague-Doc-Matteo [2014-02-22 23:20:46 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I meant the headlight. And if that's the case, then I withdraw my comment. I try to find something useful to say besides, "Good Job!*smiley face*" and then be done with it, I want to help others as much as I can. But if they're already your level of skill... ain't much I can do. But I still try.

Yeah I know what ya mean. Those comments are nice, but don't really help any. Thanks Teri I appreciate it.
But I wouldn't say its anything to do with my skill level. I can still make MOCs that sometimes need improvement. Its just this one went really really well for me. Other MOCs I sometimes don't quite hit the mark I was after, so honest polite feedback is nice.

Oh, cruel fate. After failing at building vehicles, you come and show me this impressive thing. Depressing.
Two things impress me a lot, and those are the use of heads and the amount of spikes it has without looking overcharged with blades Marvelous part usage, being my favourites the claws at the front, the handles/horns and, specially, the Brain Slug for the seat! Wonderful work, dear. Wish my last attept to build a bike were at least half as epic as this thing is!

I'm sorry buddy. If it makes you feel better, vehicles have always been one of my strong suits, but I suck at building animals. Nui-Moko was the first large scale animal build to not turn out looking like some mutant dog thing.
Thank you Lianyu. I'm glad you like it. And yeah that was something I noticed, its got a very spiky feel to it without actually really having any spike pieces on it. The parts I used have spikes molded into the part, even the Hero Factory shields which I was surprised about when I looked at them closely. My favorite part is definitely the seat. Because I found that it pops up like that completely by accident through working with it as it normally is. I was just gonna bend up the tail at a sharp angle, then it poped up like that and it retains that upward shape. So that just made working with it like a thousand times easier.
Bikes can be hard to make look right if you don't have the right parts. You at least need some motorcycle wheels. Lukily Lego has several options. Just not very large options. Lego really needs to make some larger scale wheels.

Well, it doesn't make me feel much better, but it's something I guess xD Thanks for your efforts, dear <3
So you get that cool seat effect by accident!? Lucky you! It works really well, seriously, it's the most realistic seat I have ever seen. ^^
Actually, you don't need the wheels. I mean, probably you can get a nice design by using other parts, but it could be hard to make it round enough. As far as I could, I managed to create a wheel design using only a tyre and some conectors and axles, and it worked well =3 But yeah, we need more kinds of wheels.

Plague-Doc-Matteo In reply to GoldenArpeggio [2014-02-22 20:29:08 +0000 UTC]
Well fine, fuck you. You suck. There how about that? We'll have to talk about your MOC after the MOC off is over.
Well kind of. I knew I wanted to use the brain bug as a seat. But I was originally just gonna bend the tail up at a sharp angle, but working on it I pushed on it and it poped up like that. So that gave it almost the perfect shape for a motorcycle seat. Thanks Lianyu. Yeah you can put together a wheel or use other round parts as wheels, but they never really look right IMO.

Well it still wouldn't do you any good. The motor isn't an actual motor, its just a hunk of plastic that looks like one. You'd need a "realifyer." To zap it and turn it into a real life life sized chopper.
Then you could ridez it arounds.
What rider? There is no rider yet.

Oh I see. No Grind Star is just the MOC that inspired me to pull out my black and dark red parts and get some more off Bricklink and build something. It just happened to be a chopper. I haven't built a rider for it yet. I think I'm gonna go build something else then come back to the rider after a MOC or two. That way I'm not so burnt out of dealing with the chopper and it'll be a little more fresh.

Thanks buddy.
Yeah they look really good blended together. Some colors don't quite work being blended. www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.β¦ Black and yellow don't actually work that well. It ends up looking like some kind of fucked up yellowish greenish color. The Barraki had some pretty cool marbled parts going on though, including the red and black dude where I used his head for the gas tank. The glow in the dark parts like on Tokadox was pretty cool. The brown parts on Carapar are like a weird mix of brown with a little yellow and black mixed in. www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.β¦ I kinda shy away from the marbled colored elements though. Its usually because they lock you into a pretty specific color scheme. But here it worked and I actually tried to work the gradients in my favor by positioning them accordingly.
Well technically, the Reta Sarka is Black and Yellow. I guess I should rename it "The Desert Bee." I actually really like that. That's actually rather fitting cause it does have quite a sting with that turret. Its not like crazy fast but it does get around pretty good. Thanks for the idea Greg. I'm seriously considering renaming the Reta Sarka. The Innenrrad is the crazy fast one. That one's basically for hauling ass through the desert at long intervals.

R&C was a great game but it got kind of repetitive. The Jak games were more story and character driven so I liked that more. The latter two had a nice mix of platforming, shooting, vehicle driving, fighting and lots of like minigames so I preferred that one more.
