Description About The MOC
Howling Knight is something of a prototype for a MOC I wanted to build in the future. I wanted to create a MOC with a hooded cloak and I discovered that Lego made a hood for a Duplo figure   I combined it with the tattered cape from Sir Fangar to create a tattered hood look. I find it quite effective. Fortunately though a friend who posts elsewhere told me of another method of making hoods that will be more flexible. But I still felt this guy deserved to see completion and the light of day.

He's also really inspired by probably one of my favorite Blocks of Magic The Gathering, which is the Innistrad Block. Such lovely artwork and direction for it. I honestly recommend going through and looking at the visual spoiler for that set or the whole block (Innistrad, Dark Ascension, Avacyn Restored). It has quite lovely stylized gothic artwork. While on that subject, this is a very interesting read .

Bio
This poor accursed being was once a noble knight of a king's order. One mid-autumn evening he and his loyal company had to escort a foreign Emissary back home. Suddenly the convoy was ambushed. At first they thought it was an enemy of the state, but they were far underestimating their adversary. Their foe was an ancient evil that befell to obscurity and myth--The Lycanthrope. The other men were ripped to pieces while Odric, The King's guard escaped with a deep laceration  to his shoulder. Shortly after he began to feel strange, unlike himself. He blacked out and the man known as Odric was forever lost...to madness.

Now the Howling Knight roams the lands devouring farm animals and people alike, not fully a man or beast, but a marriage of the two unlike anything man has seen before, at least men who have been recording history. It turns out the old legends are true after all. While remnants of Odric remain, he is a shambled mess of consciousness, muttering to himself or screaming out in fear and anger in every waking moment.  Part of him simply wishes to die and be freed from his torment...Then there's the beast, feral and of baser instinct. Every argument of the soul is one by this invasion of the soul. There is a small part of him that holds out hopes that there is some cure for such madness, perhaps a powerful cleric knowing the ancient ways. Perhaps he may some day be whole again, but perhaps he is doomed till the end of days...

Plague-Doc-Matteo In reply to ??? [2018-11-12 19:14:01 +0000 UTC]

Well thank you!

Hmmm If I go with every single point that is intended to move, counting all toes and fingers About 32 points I think. But that's each toe, each finger, the wrists, elbows, two joints to make the shoulder entirely flexible, the legs by themselves is 14 points. Then theres some articulation in the torso, and the head.

The way I like to build Bionicles, not every builder does this but a lot do, I like them to be a lot like an action figure. I want to be able to pose it and really do a lot with it. So its like some of those really super articulate figures that companies make, which is cool. You can go as poseable or as statuesque as you want with these lego creations, and that's kinda the fun of it all. Builders can build however they'd like really.

Gosh damn, that must've taken you a lot of time to build such an articulated bionicle figure!    Did you keep any notes on which parts you used and how many of them you used, etc?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Plague-Doc-Matteo In reply to Farumir [2018-11-14 07:11:47 +0000 UTC]

Actually, not really. This figure was built pretty quickly, maybe several hours over two days? I remember him going together pretty quick. Bionicle figures can be pretty articulate if the builder making it wants them to be.

I didn't take any notes or anything, but I can go back, look at the figure and see what parts I did use. I typically don't keep any notes or lists of parts, and I don't count them either. Most builders don't, so we don't ever have an idea of how many parts are in the MOC. That's a common question lego builders get at conventions to.

I seriously wish I hadn't given my old Rakshi and Borak bionicles away now, could've reused the parts for an experiment I've been working on.

You have no idea how many times I've heard "I wish I hadn't given my bionicles away."

Well if its any consolation, if you'd like to buy some bionicles, you can usually find some bulk lots on Ebay pretty cheap. And Facebook Market place isn't a bad place to look either.

Oh there's a Lego shop in the town near me, they sell spare parts for custom builders.

Plague-Doc-Matteo In reply to Farumir [2018-11-16 07:25:05 +0000 UTC]

Is it an official lego store, or like a second hand store selling their own parts?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Farumir In reply to Plague-Doc-Matteo [2018-11-16 14:28:35 +0000 UTC]

Official, they have a huge display pillar filled with different parts for both lego and bionicle/chimera products that you can pick and buy. It doesn't always have all parts however, just the essentials like joints, blocks, heads, armor pieces, etc.

When was the last time you've been in there? Because The Pick A Brick walls only ever had Bionicle parts in it once, for like a limited time. As far as I know.

Farumir In reply to Plague-Doc-Matteo [2018-11-17 01:59:09 +0000 UTC]

They're there all the time, however they're called Chimera or something instead of Bionicle now, UK stores must be different from US ones.

Huh that's interesting. Would it be possible for you to go there and take pictures? I'd like to see what they've got.

I'm off on a date tomorrow in town so sure I can do that if the store's open on a sunday. Like you said they might've changed it coz' I've not had a very good look in there since I was still with my ex (he had a bit of a fascination with lego but never actually did anything with the parts he bought) but that was only a year and a half ago.

If you could manage that I'd appreciate it. Though I wouldn't be at all surprised if they aren't there anymore. I believe the "Bionicle" style parts being on the Pick A Brick Wall was just a promotional move and they only did it for a short time. I have a Lego store I visit fairly regularly, and those kinds of parts have never been on the wall since I started going to the store. But I remember hearing about things like bones and certain shell pieces being available for a period of time. Problem is, they're big clunky parts that take up a lot of space in the cups, so they're really inefficient buys.

Farumir In reply to Plague-Doc-Matteo [2018-11-18 20:23:34 +0000 UTC]

Sorry my mistake, they're not there anymore, only ball joints left. And I couldn't even see any Chimera kits available at all, just something called Ninjaro.

Plague-Doc-Matteo In reply to Farumir [2018-11-18 23:31:44 +0000 UTC]

That doesn't surprise me. Lego discontinued Chima a few years ago. Lego themes typically only last 3 years, unless they do really well, like Ninjago. That one started out as a three year theme, but it proved super popular, so they made it an evergreen theme like Starwars, or Lego City.

Thank you for checking for me. I really appreciate it.

Farumir In reply to Plague-Doc-Matteo [2018-11-19 00:48:11 +0000 UTC]

Then how do you get bionicle-like parts anymore? Just ebay or does the Lego company still make them? I see plenty of similar ones in Argos (not sure if the US has that).

And no problem, it was an easy enough task when it's where I'm going anyway.

"serious" builders have a few tools at our disposal. The first is this website, Bricklink. www.bricklink.com/v2/main.page Its one part huge expansive data base for all things lego, and one part secondary market. You have sellers who independently run their own stores selling lego. Everything from full sets, minifigs, individual parts, all the way to the original boxes and instructions or weird Merch lego has made. You can pretty much buy anything lego there.

The second tool is Ebay like you mentioned. There's less specific control, but you can find some really good deals on Ebay. Bulk lots can go for pretty cheap to.

The next alternative is just buying sets. Lego doesn't have Bionicle or any buildable figure line active anymore. Even the Star Wars ones have been phased out, so now it's back to the secondary market. But for a long time, there was always some kind of offering that a person could just go to the store and buy.

Awesome! Haven't played either or done Magic (tried Dark Souls but gave up after first few hollows, my brother has finished all three of them plus Bloodborne). I love this scrappish armor. He really looks like he wolfed out in that armor and has been stuck in it for quite some time.

OOOOOOOKKKKKKKAAAAAYYYYY

I've been putting this off until I got proper time to look at it and read the bio and stuff and I finally did, so HERE I AM.

First of all, I love how that hood worked! It looks really good. Secondly, and this is my main complaint about this build, I feel like the legs were sort of hobble together. I get that he's gone nutso and probably would have some shoddy, beat up armor after a while, but it still just seems... slapped on there. Moving on, I love, love, love that torso. The shaping is lovely and the flow is fantastic. The arms are also really nice and I feel like they go well with the overall build. I really like that you made the first toe on the feet have a bigger nail, it really adds to his sort of brusque, murderous look. Overall a nicely done build!

Plague-Doc-Matteo In reply to Gale-OneOfMany [2015-08-30 13:36:41 +0000 UTC]

Thanks Gale. So I'm not quite clear on what your complaint about the legs are, you think they were just kinda slapped together? The legs did give me the most trouble on this build so I can see why you think that. I didn't want them to be too big and bulky. One of the ideas I needed to work around was that he was confined to his armor. Old school knight armor was literally bolted on in some areas. So I thought I'd try to keep some basic proportions and then extend them in areas outside of the armor like in the lower limbs. So in a way he's a canned werewolf. How might I be able to improve the legs then?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Gale-OneOfMany In reply to Plague-Doc-Matteo [2015-08-30 14:00:20 +0000 UTC]

I think specifically if you added some armor to the outside of the mid-leg thing it might be better. They just feel slapped together because they seem underdeveloped. Plus the transition from the armor of the mid-leg to the black of the lower leg looks awkward from the side.

And lol, canned werewolf XD

I seem to have sprawled myself over every site that people share Bionicle on, I can't find anyone I knew a year ago.  (what in the name of all that's holy are these emotions...)

He looks so cool, and in the main pic the black ball joints give him really cute eyes. :3

looks amazing. but where you get al the pieces? Years of collecting or is there an online-shop for all bionicle pieces. because i don't think there are pieces like the old ones in the official piece-shop from Lego. i lost most of the pieces and sets i owned and a gave a few to my younger cousins and i dont want to steal them back :c °L°

And excuse my grammar. my english isn't that good. i don't even know if i made any mistakes at all c:

Plague-Doc-Matteo In reply to KyokoLive [2015-07-25 14:44:30 +0000 UTC]

Your english was just fine. Better than some people who speak it natively in fact.

To answer your question, yes you can buy parts online. There's a website called Bricklink   Its what most of us serious enough MOCers use to acquire parts we need. Its a bit like Amazon for Lego, you have sellers running their own stores, and you buy from the store based on what they have, their prices, and region.  Though I've bought internationally a few times when no one else had the parts I really needed. BL also has a huge database of parts, so you can find the exact part you're needing and then find stores selling it. Like any online store, you add items to your cart, check out, and pay. BL mostly works off paypal. The seller running the store sends you an invoice, you pay them, they shipp the order, once you get it you confirm you received it and leave feedback. Its great because if you're looking for a very specific part, or certain quantities of a given part, you can find it most of the time. The only drawback is that no one store hardly ever has everything you're looking for, so you have to settle on stores that have most of what you want, or shop with multiple stores, which can get pricy when you're adding shipping costs multiple times. Its not a perfect solution, but it's the most useful tool we builders have. I've used it so much to get parts I needed to complete a MOC or to buy parts that I later tinkered and experimented with that turned into a really great MOC.

The other option for getting Bionicle is bulk lots on Ebay. You have less control of what you're getting and you'll get a lot of random stuff or a lot of the same stuff, but you can get a bulk amount of stuff for cheap if you know how to look for it.

Thanks for the compliment, I hope this helps

~Dave.

Thanks. I agree, it worked, but it's limiting because of how small the actual hood piece is. I'm limited to older bionicle and some HF heads. Bionicle masks are a bit too big and custom heads are probably out of the question, unless I keep it small.

GoldenArpeggio [2015-07-15 18:53:59 +0000 UTC]

First of all, love the bio. It was an amazing short read. <3

Can't say exactly the same of the MOC though. I like it, it's the best werewolf MOC I've seen (and I saw a bunch since Moonwerewolfair), but... I think there are points that could be improved... Specially for a MOCer like you, we want top quality from you now As a prototype it is, I'm really expecting the future version of it, no doubt it would be awesome... But for now I feel like it's a bit messy.
The problem is probably the silver: I'm not sure how to improve it since hey, you saw Nemios, I had almost one year of frustration with that thing... Silver is a color hard to work with because the parts of it either have a lot of detail on them or are almost completely plain. So at the end there's more detail on the sides of the torso and the upper legs than in the front of the torso, the shoulders or the lower legs. My suggestions would probably go either to try to smooth the build a bit, changing the HF chest armor of the sides for the plain one for example, or add more detailing to the sides of the lower legs and the shoulders. Chains and spikes would help a lot in that case.
Also, I think those grey axles on the feet are available in black, if they are the ones I think... If you can't hide them I would suggest to change its color, at least.

Wow that was quite a complain. Sorry about that ^^" Now onto the good points, I have to say. The cloack looks great and I love the use of those balljoints for holding it. The chest design looks nice, like that shaping and how it's barely seen the H pattern. The toes are amazing, the size detail is something I never expect for this kind of foot and I'm grateful for it. Last but not least, LOOK AT THOSE HANDS. Probably one of the most articulable desings I have seen.

So, to sum up: the MOC has a lot of designs and concepts I love, but the work with so many different silver parts has made some of his armor parts clash a bit between messy and clean. Can't wait to see the final version of it... Though probably I'll had to endure until Hallowe'en, right? Nice work, dear!
