After so long of using Photoshop, the pen tool was my enemy. I've only been using my PS CS5 for a year now, and I've pretty much just had to tinker with tools and it has such a steep learning curve...
But this was so easily explained that just a few moments ago, I made a line for a bed that was in a piece I'm working on! I nearly jumped out of my socks it was so easy! All this time the pen tool scared me and all I needed was to be told HOW to use it. This is so easy to follow as a tutorial, I'll be playing around more with this later. Thank you x100, this will really help make my art have a crisper look!

The pictures at the bottom are completed linearts, not sketches! You can start with utter crap and still manage to make something cool with the pen tool! XD

Hi, Is it okay if i ask you for help?
I read this tutorial and tried it but my photoshop(CS4) won't let me change the brush pressure.
Nothing changes when i click the pen pressure option, and next to the option it has a warning symbol which said "Control by pen pressure requires a pen sensitive pressure tablet.
Do i need a tablet to do this or is there another way to do it?
Thank you for your help!

Popo-Licious In reply to Omega-valeth-sama [2011-09-02 13:45:36 +0000 UTC]
You need a tablet in order to alter the pen pressure settings. :3

awww, ok, then i need to go get a tablet don't i? Is there a lineart tool in "SAI" that is similar to photoshop, that i can use without a tablet?
Thank you for your help^__^

Popo-Licious In reply to Omega-valeth-sama [2011-09-04 13:19:16 +0000 UTC]
I personally don't use SAI, but I know it has a pen tool. However, to my knowledge, no program is able to simulate pressure sensitivity without a pressure sensitive input device, if that makes sense. :3

I'm...just gonna help...here...
Yeah, you can't use pen pressure if you don't have a tablet with pen sensitivity. That's why there's the 'simulate pressure' option, which helps your lines appear...really the same as if you would use a tablet.

Hey, so I really do love this tutorial and it's helped me a lot already, except for the fact that when I right-click, the "Stroke Path" option is shown in grey and I can't click it. Perhaps I'm doing something wrong? xD I'd really appreciate any help you can offer <3

Popo-Licious In reply to amentrine [2011-08-26 20:52:09 +0000 UTC]
I'll do my best to help! First, is the layer that you're drawing on locked? And second (and probably more important), do your settings look exactly like mine?
π: 0 β©: 1
amentrine In reply to Popo-Licious [2011-08-26 20:55:52 +0000 UTC]
Yes, my settings were identical and the later wasn't lock. I closed and opened PS again and now it works? xD I'm not sure how that happened. Thank you so much anyways, you're really kind helping people out like this.

Awesome tutorial, but what are the settings on your brush when you made those last 2 pics
π: 0 β©: 1
Popo-Licious In reply to DAZKO [2011-08-22 16:25:40 +0000 UTC]
I still used the default brush for the last two examples. :3 For the first image, I used the default brush with the minimum diameter set somewhere around 60%. For the very last image, I got the super tapered, weighty effect on the line by chipping away at them with an eraser when I was done. :3
If you meant to ask why the pen tool paths are colored pink and blue respectively, that's just some editing I did to the screenshot so that the tutorial would be easier to understand and view. To my knowledge, you can't actually achieve that in PS. XD

Great! I have a Pen Tool in my Painter but I could never get it right (I want to make CLEANER line arts rather than just tracing over my scanned work with a "Pen Brush"). congrats on the DD, and I'll try to give this a go.
