Description
This is a Trade with .*Predator755 wrote me a story for . In exchange, I drew up this almighty mass of tentacular trouble. He'd originally just wanted an armor design that was based on the "killers" from AvP Three World War, but I wound up way, way, way out in left field during the initial drawing phase. Fortunately, he let me get away with it.
So, at long last, I have finished up the coloring on this complicated thing. This took almost as much work as my average book cover owing to the fact that I had to do a LOT of fiddling to get the foreground and background to separate properly. I still think it's hard to read, but it makes more sense than my last attempt to throw a Predator into a pile of tentacled monsters.
This madness brought to you today by ink and Prismacolor pencils. There's a watercolor underpainting, too, but that doesn't show through.

For some reason, I feel a need to say that how you did the afterimage effect of his throwing arm looks really, really cool. o.o
Also, I like the various armor and creature designs. And his helmet is cool! Too bad he lost it.

Thank you! I personally think I botched the arm's motion blurr a bit with too much color, but the effect still works. I'm glad you like it.
I really need to do more Predator gods. Especially fallen gods. There's a lot of potential with Predator BAD GUYS.

Oh goodness! These pictures are so inspiring, your one of the few if not only artists I know of that illustrate Yaut'ja Mythology.
I often use them as inspiration to a base storyline to my more "magical" or "spiritual" oc's.
It's awesome! Great work!

Thank you very much! I'm glad you like my pictures enough that you are inspired to weave the ideas into your own characters.
I really enjoy mythology and folk tales from many different cultures. I pick up bits and pieces to weave into my Predator mythos. One of these days very soon, I'm going to get back into my story so that I can put all those myth-weavings to good use! Then we'll get to meet some of the gods properly.

Thanks very much!
It's the ridiculous degree of detail that really drives me to excel. I love doing this stuff, even if it does take some time. I think there's about thirty hours in this piece from initial pencil drawing to final coloring, but time just dissolves while I'm in the Zone.

lol, I think I'd go nuts. That kind of detail really intimidates me.
But I guess when you know what you're doing, time doesn't really matter since you know where you're heading with it. I just saw the progress photos for SIS4 Bird5, and it really gives me an idea of that. From the pictures, you're definitely not futzing around, you're heading in a clear direction, and you know what you want it to look like. Or so I translate it XD.

very well...
You should try a new genre using gold fringes embedded inside the matte borders. I saw one at a local museum and it looked like a rich featured trace over, but it was nothing like this.
Nice.

Hmmm... Something more like a Renaissance artist's vision of Hell, perhaps? I think that's where I want to head with the next tentacle-tangle that I do, but I will need to do some more research.

I agree with Torachande. But the picture is nicely balanced between all of the colors and the complicated swirl of tentacles.
π: 0 β©: 1
rachaelm5 In reply to Tenebrian [2011-04-26 01:38:06 +0000 UTC]
Thanks! It's difficult to keep this kind of composition clear. I think the colors of each creature separate out more than I would really like, but I had some trouble keeping them distinctive otherwise. I still need some practice when it comes to really complex compositions.
LOL - Yes, Torachande does have the right of it. That Predator's days are numbered. In fact, he's down to about four-tenths of a second.

Tenebrian In reply to rachaelm5 [2011-04-26 18:40:32 +0000 UTC]
Well, with all of your art, you tend to favor complex compositions, so I imagine you are getting plenty of practice. At the very least I can see how your black and white line work separates and balances the complexity of many of your art pieces. So, you are at least halfway there, even if you feel like you haven't mastered the color yet.
