Description
... the latest stage of my work-in-progress, as submitted previous: [link] ... and yes indeed, that baby there is a 1970 AMC Gremlin hatchback...... my production team is considering doing a complete re-render for our Siggraph film festival entry (as described in my last journal entry: [link] )... I've been experimenting with 3DS Max 5 and the new advanced lighting tools, and I gotta admit this test frame showing off the new Skylight feature is a definite improvement over direct lighting in Max... I just wish it didn't take so damned long to crank out every single stinkin' frame...
... let's see: 3 minutes of finished film footage x 60 sec/minute x 30 frames/sec = a whopping 5,400 finished frames compressed to video...
... okay, multiply that total by 40 minutes average rendering time for each frame... that equals 6 months of constant rendering for a single computer, or one month for a bank of 6 computers committed to rendering non-stop, 24-7... that means no crashes, no problems, nothing...

I just thought of the perfect finale for this series ( and that intro movie you made with the character, awesome still btw).
He needs to pull out his box of LP, and take a gulp, his "spinach" if you will, and powerhouse that door!#@@#$

This is great! I absolutely love it. There is nothing like a Gremlin to get my motor racing.
The whole scene is so detailed and well done. I would like to get some of that lowfat chicken milk, sounds tastey.

... you know how when you're in a group of people and one person makes up a joke, then everyone else expands on it? ... this is what happened in our Animation Production Team class the whole time we were establishing the storyline; one guy made a garbled statement about chickens and lowfat milk for window posters... we laughed at him and teased him so much about it, I secretly made the poster you see in the bkgd and suprised everyone the following week with the test renders...
... then, when it came time to submit it to the SIGGRAPH animation festival, the entry form required a production company name, I anguished over an hour for a suitable name, then I came up with Lowfat Chickenmilk Productions...
... there are other sight gags in there that are so small or so quick, you can't really see them unless you're looking for them; things like "Possum Traction" lettering on the tires (instead of Positraction) and "Old Car Scent" on the airfreshener trees hanging from the rearview mirror... also, our instructor's last name was Tavernetti, so one of the buildings in the background is called "Eddie's Tavern"...

Possum traction. XD I just had this horrible mental image of possums being thrown into a wood chipper and the pieces being compressed into tires, much in the way they shred up old tires/sneakers/whatever and make I think astroturf out of it. Gross gross gross! XD The lowfat chickenmilk is a classic, though!

rapidograph In reply to su-chan [2004-07-06 01:07:36 +0000 UTC]
... the basis for the possum joke:
... another one of our 2D instructors was part of a crew that worked on some of MTV's "Liquid Television" animation series (the show that made Aeon Flux a household word)... his production unit made the chaotic and surreal "Speedbump the Roadkill Possum" where every episode had Speedbump lingering out in the highway while dealing with life's problems, and it was always resolved by a car running over him...

bwahahahhaa. the only thing that would improve (and further increase render time) is crank up the index of refraction of his glasses.
Lowfat Chicken milk.. priceless

usedtoit03 [2004-03-05 17:18:08 +0000 UTC]
i would cut the resolution to 320x240 for video, and only 25 frames per sec, it would render in a few days. , cool setup you have there, i love the car.

Awesome! And I would say that since it's going to Siggraph it's worth trying to go with the global illumination if at all possible. But I know what you mean, what a huge render hit. Keep it up, and hopefully I'll see it at the film festival!

Ah Siggraph where the great shorts are made....Tin Toy, Luxo Jr., Red's Dream just to name a few. Perhaps A Man and His Machine will be the next good featurette Good luck at Siggraph! Love the attention to details...the out of order sign on the Soda Machine, the Lowfat Chicken Milk (oh yuck it makes me turn green just thinking about it
), the plaid pants and the mismatched socks. I probably should have pointed this out earlier in the first version, but where is his pocket protector and what about a license plate for the back of the car?
Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know you don't have the time nor the rendering power to go back and make frame by frame changes, just pointing out possible changes for the sequel
Oh, is it my imagination, but the wheel on the far right of the car looks like it is not properly registered to the ground...it looks like it is sunken into the ground.
