With so much change in the way the railways look and operate in the past fifty years, when it comes to comparison it is difficult for the younger generation to choose. Steam locomotive traction has been around since the very infant days of the railway, and shaped the country as it stands today. And electric traction was one of it's successors, with raw power, acceleration and speed, it made for greater efficiency at a cheaper price.
However the decision still remains, steam or electric? For me, steam remains just as attractive as it was in it's heyday, there's something about steam locomotives thats not only highly interesting, but also romantic and awe inspiring. However I was born 20 years after steam had left the mainline in the UK (1968 - 1988) and was born into a world of diesel and electric traction, so for that matter alone I cannot ignore the modern stance of railway operation. The Pendolino is for me one of the better looking examples of the next generation of rail travel, sleek stylish, fast and comfortable. Just like their ancestors, who live on today alongside them in harmony, as is seen here with the Black 5, a William A. Stanier FRS masterpiece.
The two examples of traction are captured together to great effect, clearly displaying to viewers who don't share this same interest the difference in design and operation from the 1930s to the 2000s. The highlights on both the loco and the unit do both items justice, and the sharpness of the still shot also adds to the merits of the photo. However these sort of shots have been done before, and therefore it lacks in originality which to me is a great shame, otherwise said image would have gotten full marks from me. A great effort indeed.

An excellent shot! Black Five with a High Speed Train, quite a contrast, reminds me a little of the 15 Guinea Special, last steam run on BR.
Here in the U.S., a shot like this is nearly impossible because the locomotive won't meet up at a station alongside other current stock, usually at a rail show or meet with other historic locomotives, and if they do come across modern Amtrack, you'll have people crowding round the engine.
This shot has a lot of balance to it, I quite like that.

on the left I see an ugly, cold machine with no heart no soul. On the right I see a strong hearted, beautiful engine who servered and will serve more people than a diesel and will always be loved.

my comment is still valid as the power sources from either is like 100 years between each other

That the newer locomotive is dirtier than the older one (or appears to be) is kind of funny.

My favorite part is that despite the difference in age, they are just as filthy as each other. Some things just don't change over time...
Great photo.

Thanks, yes as you can see Virgin Trains Pendolino, (A State of the art Tilting high speed train) is just as dirty as a Classic British Black (Standard) 5. Its always a laugh but also its a great contrast as each train is at opposite end of the technology level in trains, and each is just as important in the other in the history of trains in Great Britain.

Pity Virgin Trains ruined it by keeping their trains dirty! Ha ha

Ahhh, the elegance of Britains great railways with steam up, sitting next to a gigantic rolling toaster. XD
the choice is clear for me, I would just love to see that EMU outpull a Stanier Black 5
