Description
"This world ain't big enough for the two of us..."There are so many sites/complaints that bitch on Simba being a copy of Kimba. If you must get angry, be angry with Disney for not giving Osamu Tezuka any credit. But why hate on TLK itself? Ripoff or not, it's a kick ass movie! I guess this piece reflects the fans that are for Kimba vs. the fans that are for The Lion King. Keep in mind, this is strictly a joke. I'm a big fan of TLK, but I do still want to see some of Kimba, The White Lion. (or Leo, the Lion) Even when that happens, I'm not turning my back on Simba. Later, I will make a picture of the two lions getting along just fine, the way that I wish Kimba and Simba fans would. I'm not here to bash one and claim the other as the 'victor/original'. I'm here to celebrate the existence of both movies/shows/characters.
BTW, Simba is Swahili for 'lion', not a ripoff of the name 'Kimba'.

LOL! Even though I like "The Lion King" better, I totally agree that any Kimba fans hating this film should hate on the filmmakers, not on the film itself.
On a related note, this may not be the first time Disney copied an anime...Β have you seen "Sea Prince and the Fire Child"(1981)? I'm pretty certain that Disney's "The Little Mermaid" borrowed influence from that movie, yet has never acknowledged its existence. Maybe it's just a coincidence ("Sea Prince" is pretty obscure)??? Although the plot is different, the animation, music, and characters are all very similar. The hero, Syrius, is so much like Ariel that it's scary XD!
Ariel and Syrius are both rebellious teenage redheads who live under the sea, explore forbidden places with their younger and more cowardly fish friends, and fall in forbidden love with a surface dweller. Not to mention that both their fathers are rulers of the sea! Plus Syrius and Ariel even share the same curious, outgoing, cheerful, rambunctious, adventurous personality. Β (There's even a villain in both movies who wants the Sea King's throne for themselvesΒ )
Here's a clip from the film:Β www.youtube.com/watch?v=XYuz6pβ¦
English dub here:Β www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hbwbhxβ¦
Like I said, this could all be just a coincidence! But after reading your comments, I wouldn't be surprised if it isn't...
Bottom line: Disney's got to start giving more credit to the inspirations behind their films.
Hope to see more of your work

But the movie was based on a story by a man named Hans Christian Andersen (I think that's his name)

I don't get why they can't say that it was "inspired" by Kimba, it says it on the Kimba the White lion series dvd. "This inspired Disney to create the lion king" Β I love both and I hate seeing the two fandoms fight about it. Β At least it says that it inspired it, with peter pan they didn't even go by the original writers will that stated that the proceeds would go to a children's hospital, everyone else who made a movie version of peter pan followed the will and donated more money to hospital than what the A list Celeberites that played in movie got. Β I love the animation of both companies, but Disney can be downright sinister. Β

Agreed. I wouldn't have been difficult for them to acknowledge the one behind the inspiration.

Can I just make a non-critical comment? I looked at this picture of Leo(Kimba. I have a movie called Leo the White Lion *Derp*) and Simba and something dawned on me. Leo and Simba have different mane-styles. Simba's is like actual bangs falling in his eyes while Leo's is not. I don't see why these two fan-bases can't get along. They're nothing alike. :/ Thank you ^_^ and no, I'm not bashing either lion. I like either just fine, so I'm not being rude ^_^

Their style overall is different, but yes, I agree. There's nothing wrong with liking both lions and liking both movies. Had it not been for TLK, I wouldn't have known about the existence of Kimba. I'm still searching for the episodes of Kimba/Leo. (I didn't take your comment at being rude, BTW )

(I'm glad ^_^)Yeah. I didn't know about Kimba/Leo until way later in life, but I always had the Lion King. When I did discover Kimba/Leo, I fell in love with the new design and the overall 2D, paper-drawing style of the animals. They looked like something jumped out of a drawing someone did. ^_^ And I also love the 3D-ish look and feel of the Lion King. Both are great movies and I enjoy them both. ^_^

Well there also is the idea that, as the writers of TLK have said that the story was a replay of Hamlet, now from what I understand of Kimba, there's also parallels from that story to Hamlet.
As a thought can you really say "they stole the idea from (Kemba)" when Kemba is a serialized story of Hamlet? Sounds like "the pot calling the kettle black"

Ya know, there's one good thing about the huge similarities. The fans of Simba, who learn of Kimba, may soon come to love him. I agree with you.......minus the fact I hadn't heard of Kimba till recently. The fans should just put it aside. Maybe there were a couple of people in Disney who decided(stupidly) to just deny, deny, deny, while many who worked on it who were probably thinking 'We should just tell them.' After all, properly crediting is better than claiming it as your own.
I truly believe not all of Disney wanted to deny the similarities.

So who at denies the inspiration exactly? I remember there was even a quote from Roy E. Disney which seemed to confirm that they were working on something similar to Kimba.
What's your opinion on Nadia/Atlantis the lost empire though?
π: 0 β©: 1
sailorharmony2000 In reply to DawnEmperor [2012-04-06 22:22:28 +0000 UTC]
Roy might have mentioned it somewhere, but was it before or after word might have gotten out about it? In other words, was it immediately mentioned to the press/public because Roy wanted to out of excitement or was it mentioned after accusations might have appeared? I don't know if one or either is the case, which is why I'm asking (out of curiosity). Thing is, even if he did mention it, why doesn't it appear in the written credits of the movie? It's cool to mention it once or twice, but everyone didn't hear that quote; putting it in writing would have solved that problem. Kipling is certainly mentioned in the written credits at the beginning of the Disney version of The Jungle Book. We're not talking about a generic story whose origins are yet to be discovered and the story has many variations throughout the world. It's one story that has so many things similar to another specific story.
Inspiration isn't a bad thing in general. It's just, asking permission first (if the owner is still alive) and putting the original source in written form usually is the hassle-free method. Hamlet's creator, which is another thing TLK is compared to, wasn't alive to have his permission asked; not to mention, many people know Hamlet or Romeo and Juliet (TLK 2) similarities when they see them; not so much for Jungle Emperor Leo. If Disney had a movie about Goldilocks and the 3 Bears and didn't mention it anywhere, most don't need confirmation that the original story isn't Disney's. However, I'm sure if all of the fans of TLK were gathered and asked if they had ever heard of Leo/Kimba, most would say no.
I have heard similar things about Nadia/Atlantis, but not only have I never seen Nadia, but I'm not a big fan of Atlantis in general (and not for that reason).
I'm hoping that my words aren't read in a harsh tone, as I'm not arguing; I'm just stating what I see/have heard. Part of me hopes that I'm wrong with the whole 'theft' thing.

Ideally, I would agree that Kimba should get its acknowledgement. Conversely though, being accused of copying Kimba doesn't seem to be something Disney would be receptive to. Disney would be getting flak either way. It may be the executive position to not acknowledge Kimba inspiration, but I think it may cut both ways.
I know that you're not trying to hate on Disney(just trying to give credit where credit is due), but I think there are a lot of fans who can get pretty vitriolic on this issue.
You don't like it? Granted, it's not the strongest Disney film, but I think it was still enjoyable.
