Description Update: Thanks everyone for the DD. I've uploaded a higher contrast image, so you may see the text better. : )

Dedicated to my the watchers, who seem to enjoy my pencil work.

This tutorial covers the materials, process, and mistakes of the penciling process, and there is even a short step by step demonstration showing how I do my pencil drawings. Although the example is anime, this can really be used for all styles and the methods and steps taken carry outside of the genre. I worked quite hard on this, so I hope you all enjoy it. This tutorial IS reading intense, but it's worth it--I promise.

Feel free to ask me a question by sending me a note. And, please do tell me if this tutorial helps you any as it encourages me to make more and it simply makes me happy.

How do I prevent smudging after I am done drawing?
All you have to do is go down your local arts and crafts store and purchase some fixative. It's like a spray that you can use on your drawings to prevent smudging. Make sure you step back away from your drawing when you spray and if you are sensative to sprays or odors, use it outside. Also, you make sure you purchase a 'workable' fixative' so that you can still come back and edit easily. You can also use hair spray as a cheap substitute^^ Don't grab the adhesive spray by mistake!! They are usually placed right next to each other in similar cans.

I make my tutorials for free, but if you enjoy my tutorials and want to donate some funds for gas, art books and such, I would appreciate it. [link]

yeah, no problem. my grandma always has hairspray at her house, that's why I know, and I know to teach beginners art classes tend to use photos. I never much liked it, but now and then its helpful...

okay I'll have to look for it. yeah, I use stuff I like, but I figured someone else's opinion that USES the stuff is better than store clerks who are trying to sell you stuff and have no life. sadly, however, there's only two half-artsy storers around here, and one is mainly a framing store and the other a craft store, so finding supplies is a nightamre i.i

thanks for the watch btw

Man... that kinda sucks that you don't have a nice art store near you as if you order from catalogs the shipping cost are ghastly >_< more than the supplies themselves...

Nice nice... *eyes shining* This is really helpful! It's detailed and it goes step-by-step.. I feel inspired.

My problem with pencil art is that I tend to go heavy while sketching. This makes rather unsightly marks when I make mistakes. I'll remember to go light.. ^_^ Thanks for making this tutorial!

PS. Do you know how to store pencil art without it smudging over time? Mine always get rather blurry after a few months or so...

sashas In reply to JinxedElf [2006-06-12 14:33:18 +0000 UTC]

Thank you ^___^ I'm glad you found it helpful.

Well, if you tend to draw heavily, invest in a harder pencil like 4H, and these will be great for initial sketches and putting in details. Then, as you want to get harder you can move up to softer pencils. The pencil shade make a big difference.

Good question. Pencil drawings to tend to smudge. All you have to do is go down your local arts and crafts store and purchase some fixative. It's like a spray that you can use on your drawings to prevent smudging. Make sure you step back away from your drawing when you spray and if you are sensative to sprays or odors, use it outside. This is what I like about your tuts, you put them in a way that people won't have a problem deciphering what you're talking about, and it's logically structured. One of the reasons I don't look at most tuts on DA is cos the artists behind write the tuts very vaguely and don't explain how to do whatever they're teaching in understandable terms. A very nice tut, this'll come in handy for a friend of mine

Thank you. I try to put alot into the tutorials I try to make them so that they are not the same old thing, and because I had to teach myself alot of the art I know, I write it for beginners and try to explain everything. I'm very glad you like it and can see what I'm trying to do ^____^
