Description Update: Thanks everyone for the DD. I've uploaded a higher contrast image, so you may see the text better. : )

Dedicated to my the watchers, who seem to enjoy my pencil work.

-----
This tutorial covers the materials, process, and mistakes of the penciling process, and there is even a short step by step demonstration showing how I do my pencil drawings. Although the example is anime, this can really be used for all styles and the methods and steps taken carry outside of the genre. I worked quite hard on this, so I hope you all enjoy it. This tutorial IS reading intense, but it's worth it--I promise.

Feel free to ask me a question by sending me a note. And, please do tell me if this tutorial helps you any as it encourages me to make more and it simply makes me happy.

How do I prevent smudging after I am done drawing?
All you have to do is go down your local arts and crafts store and purchase some fixative. It's like a spray that you can use on your drawings to prevent smudging. Make sure you step back away from your drawing when you spray and if you are sensative to sprays or odors, use it outside. Also, you make sure you purchase a 'workable' fixative' so that you can still come back and edit easily. You can also use hair spray as a cheap substitute^^ Don't grab the adhesive spray by mistake!! They are usually placed right next to each other in similar cans.

I make my tutorials for free, but if you enjoy my tutorials and want to donate some funds for gas, art books and such, I would appreciate it. [link]

wow, I love how the hat turned out! I dont really like blurrying so it often looks sketchy or it turns out as if I wiped my hand over it >.<

sashas In reply to myoo [2006-06-14 01:16:53 +0000 UTC]

Thank you. ^^

I hardly ever blend because it gets so blurry. But when I do blend I do always come back and make darker marks to sharpen things up ^^

myoo In reply to sashas [2006-06-14 16:29:34 +0000 UTC]

hmm maybe I should try out blending (thought i'm always afraid of messing it up >_<

Well, you don't have to. I like generally I like my drawings a bit sketchy :3 It shows all the work an artist did. But it also doesn't hurt to try something different...

I appreciate your time in making this tutorial, not alot of people wish to share what they know about drawing and if they do they only give you bits and pieces about what they do. Good job on the tutorial.

sashas In reply to StatMnd [2006-06-13 01:33:19 +0000 UTC]

I'm glad you appreciate it. I love to teach people what I know, which is why tutorials are always my favorite things to submit, though they take the most time. ^^ To me, if I have something and other people want it, it's my duty to share.

I'm so glad you found it helpful

Additionally, hard pencils make more of an indention in your paper, so it's bother some if you erase a lot, because they leave behind maeks, even if you erase. But they are nice for finalizing.
Art gum erasers can also be used to 'clean' plastic erasers. They work better than just erasing on a clean surface, so one can keep their erasers blindingly white constantly.
And using one's finger for blending gives an interesting effect. though it's better for larger pieces.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

sashas In reply to ladyrenozenth [2006-06-13 01:17:00 +0000 UTC]

Thanks so much. I will have to add all of those things when I update the tutorial. I forgot to put the indention part because I usually don't put too much pressure on my pencils as I draw and I gradually move up to softer grades to avoid that kind of thing. So, thank you so much for the reminder.

I didn't even know the bit about art gum erasers... thanks.

I didn't put in the part for using your fingers for blending because some people have oily hands and it can cause a mess and some people may accidently put marks where they don't need to be/ingest the graphite, but I will add it for anyone who might want to use it.

Thank you so much again

ladyrenozenth In reply to sashas [2006-06-13 03:54:58 +0000 UTC]

Lol, ingest the graphite...not that it is very toxic...maybe as much as salt. Too much of anything is bad.
I get graphite all over my hands anyway...XP

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

sashas In reply to ladyrenozenth [2006-06-13 04:19:31 +0000 UTC]

Heh. I know it's not toxic... I just don't think it's not all that good for people to eat non-food things >_>

Yeah fixative is very useful. Watch out you don’t buy adhesive by mistake. That would be unfortunate. At the store I go to they are right next to each other and in practically identical cans.

sashas In reply to maligni [2006-06-13 00:28:40 +0000 UTC]

Another note to add to my tutorial. Thanks so much for the reminder! That would be very unfortunate. Some of those adhesives are really strong....

Yes, alot of the techniques can be used for colored pencils... I just didn't want to get into different shades and what not as color slows down the load time of the image.

You're welcome. I'm elated you found it interesting^^

This was good for people to see. I'm not the best at pencils, but its something I felt I had at least an eye for, and it's true, bead gradiation is like AH MY EYES! NUUUUUUU! something I would add for beginners (and even amateurs, which is about where I am) is to use photographs to study the way cloth falls and shadows and such, or just paly with lights and your own face.

and if you can't get a fixitive spray, hair spray works too ^.~ -cheap trick-

what brand of paper do you use? I'm picky with mine. I've been using strathmore(sp?) pads, which is pretty good for my colored pencils, but I didn't like it for penciling. its too rough. so I went to computer paper again. bristol board is nice, but its a lot more expensive so I use is sparringly.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

sashas In reply to autumncoloredmelodie [2006-06-13 00:05:29 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for reminding me to put in the photography and the hair spray. It's just that I never use references or have spray on me so I forgot. Thank you. I'll have to got back and fix that when I correct all the typos as it was around 2 am that I wrote alot of it^^

I use Strathmore 400 Series medium though you may want to look for smooth in the same series. But I also like Canson drawing paper as well. But brand doesn't matter so much to me as long as the paper is strong and smooth. I don't buy paper unless I can open the pack and feel the surface and weight of it with my hands.... because I'm obsessive like that^^
