Okay! ^__^ It may be a while, until she can make them, but I'll definitely show them off!

This is really cool, do you have any ideas for or have you tried a synthetic material that will work as well?

Thank you! No, I was satisfied with this one, Apoxie is good enough for the stiff armor, and genuine leather is good for leather-looking cosplay parts))
If you mean fake leather as "synthetic material" - no, it can't hold the shape so it needs to be glued to some stiff base.

Generally, it's a reusable clay for sculpting: www.sculpturehouse.com/t-faq.a…

Thanks for the link to this! wow this is really cool and now I go off to look for your Cloud doll to see the full costume on that, because it looks amazing too, from the little photo

Many thanks! Yes, I have a Cloud BJD too! His costume is a bit simpler but still decent, and he has Fusion and a tiny Sephiroth plushie

This tutorial is great, and I intend to try it. But I have heard that if you try to bake polymer clay on a plasticine form, the plasticine will turn into liquid and make a mess, so the second part of your tutorial probably will work best with air-dry clays like epoxy putty or paper mache.

Thank you! Yes, I wouldn't dare to bake the plasticine: some brands even could be toxic! Epoxy putty is the best choice IMHO, and paper-mache sounds good too!

By natural leather, do you mean real leather? does fake leather work for this too, or only the real stuff?

scargeear In reply to Emmaethyst [2013-02-23 09:44:27 +0000 UTC]
Yes, I mean a real leather, received from cows to be exact. The fake one is not an option in this case because only real leather holds its form while shaped this way. It's a unique material that can't be substituted easily.

Thanks a lot! There are several ways, lots of materials could be used besides epoxy putty and leather, I just showed 2 methods that worked best for a certain purpose.

wow this is awesome thankyou XD. do you know if the leather works as well in a full human size scale or only small?

scargeear In reply to IjiRyushippo [2012-04-24 06:08:07 +0000 UTC]
Thanks a lot! Yes, it's pretty possible to make a leather shoulderplate in human scale but a leather of a proper thickness should be used. Stiff leather about 5 mm thick should do the trick. It's significantly harder to shape it though, I doubt plasticine and cardboard are suitable base materials))

Very thorough tutorial! If I don't make BJD armor with this, I'll probably end up making the full size version (now that the hubby saw it!).

Thank you! Full size version out of leather is perfect but epoxy armor may turn out too heavy... I think strong paper mache base and a thin layer of epoxy putty over it can solve this little issue.

Thanks! I agree about the epoxy armor. Paper mache can solve many of the world's problems, in my opinion!

OMG!! It is amazing!! Though I do not have a character that needs to wear shoulder plate. But you make it so simple that I might just try making one!
Can I ask you something about boot making? How do you come out with the shape of the leather to be sew to the base? I mean it is 3-D stuff how do you put them on the 2-D leather? I am thinking of making a simple horse riding boot.
Btw, thanks for sharing this!!! XD
