Description
Happy Easter! Spring is here, and with spring comes all the chick(en)s!ΒHere's one of my Rhode Island Red hens I used to have, the classic brown chicken. Feelee was loud, feisty, an escape artist, and had a ravenous appetite for lizards (and even caught and ate a mouse once before I could stop her). She was a fantastic girl while she was around, and here she poses, ready to destroy the front lawn! No blade of grass stands a chance!

Thanks! I'm glad I was able to get this shot of her while we still had her.

Thanks! Haha she can be pretty intimidating to some, since she tries to attack birds, knocks over garbage cans even I struggle to move, and eats fingers without realizing that's not part of the treat! XD

Once a cute, adorable chick and now a fully grown rooster. It's certainly huge at an angle like that. Hope she's doing fine though!

Thanks! I actually got her from a podiatrist I was working with (his kids couldn't take care of the chicks any more), and it was pretty fun seeing how she went from such a tiny chick into a feisty hen of pure muscle, knocking over large garbage cans and uprooting full-grown plants haha. I also hope she's doing fine, as unfortunately she was getting too aggressive towards our smaller hens (they were 1/2 to 1/3 the size) and we had to rehome her and her sister about two years ago. The family seemed really nice though! Β

Aw that's a shame but I do think there were ways to keep the flock under control. Just wondering do you live on a farm in europe or something?

We definitely tried, and it worked for a few years, but they became increasingly belligerent towards the older, smaller hens. It doesn't help that at that point, we just had a small, suburban backyard (the pool takes up half the yard) and our neighbors are pretty close. It also wasn't fair to my mom since I had then left for college and left her with my chickens, since they're not allowed in the dorm. The two Rhode Island Reds were also really noisy at times. I felt that for the sake of my other hens (I still have 3 of them, and they're turning 8 years old in a month!), our neighbors, as well as to keep the work load down for my mom, it was best to rehome the younger ladies.Β Perhaps in the future if I do live on a farm (that'd be fun! But so much work!) and there's more space, it'll be feasible, but for now, just my three, tiny old hens will do. Β

Aw that's sweet! I always wondered what it would be like to have chicks or even hedgehogs as pets. While I wouldn't encourage having other pet versions of animals like per say bears or hippos it would be nice if animals could get a long with humans.
Also, you had your own pool? Lucky you...XD

I used to teach at a zoo, and hedgehogs are pretty nifty little guys! But definitely not for anyone with delicate skin haha... even with gloves on, they're really prickly, but oh so adorable!Β
Agreed! I think if animals and humans could get along (and taking excessive human greed out of the equation), that would solve a lot of issues in the world. I suppose if they got along too well though, we'd be in for some serious disease problems haha.Β
When we moved, we actually really didn't want a pool, since it's only usable for about 1-2 months a year where we are, is high maintenance, gets dirty easily (too many trees and fires and bugs and dead rats drowning in it, even frogs), has massive safety and liability issues, and uses up tons of electricity. Although it's less private, a community pool is far better, with other people taking care of it, plus it's big enough to do lots of laps in too. You're definitely not missing out on much if you don't have a pool. Β

Oh wow you taught at a zoo? That sounded really fun! Must have been taking care of the animals and showing their biological adaptations. I just hope you never had to deap with their manure haha!
Geez, dead rats and frogs? Ever tried putting a sheet over the pool so no dirt or animals will get in? XD

It was really fun! I did it for two years. While I didn't have to do any cleanup (even though I sure could smell it...XD), I did get to show off plastic replicas of animal poop. It was hilarious showing the little kids these realistic, semi-squishy models of poop scattered all over the table. It's a great way to teach them about animal diet and what to look out for on hikes, while keeping their attention. Can't resist a bit of poop humor!
We have tried putting one of those plastic sheets over the pool, since it also helps keep it warmer, but animals still got through it. Additionally, we stopped using it once reports came up about kids who fell in the pool, and got trapped underneath the tarp and drowned. We also had one of those portable fences that go around the pool, but I guess it doesn't stop animals from getting through! You'll know when the neighbors have set out rat poison (it makes animals really thirsty) because one day, there will suddenly be three dead rats on the bottom of the pool in the morning. I used to feel really sad for the critters that drowned in the pool, but it happens so often we more or less have become desensitized to it. One of the worst to clean up though is when there are fires (every year), and the entire pool just turns completely black from the ash raining from the sky. Yuck!Β

Haha! I can imagine you showing some poop to little girls and they get terrified seeing it. And hey, watch the boundaries of youth you don't want kids to say anything badΒ Β
XD Wow that certainly sounds fun. It's like in Monster Hunter: I always feel bad for killing monsters but due to the grinding for rare materials whenever I kill them by accident I'm like, "You know what screw it. They're revived later on, and they asked for it." And ash rain? Yikes, never hear that happen in a neighborhood before.

Haha it's funny since for the most part, regardless of gender or age, they all seemed fascinated by it, and eagerly grabbed the fake poop to smash into each other's faces or pose for a photo! XDΒ
Agreed, I remember initially feeling bad for those baby aptonoth, or in Pikmin, every time they died and the way they cried, yikes! But with enough playing, you just get immune to it, especially when there is basically little to no consequence for having them killed off. I suppose the same goes for most things though, like from changing a diarrhea diaper to dissecting cadavers- the first time may be really yucky, but it gets easier every time!
Yeah, ash rain sounds like something out of Silent Hill, but it's something that really does happen almost every year (if not twice a year), and it's gross and smelly! It's particularly bad for those with asthma or breathing difficulties to handle. Β

Now that's one spring chicken! She's ready to show why she's known through all the worlds as Feelee the Destroyer. To this day grass still hears her name and shudders in fear. Try as they might, their defenses prove futile to her classic good looks and insatiable appetite!

Even now, they tremble in fear. There has only been one other who could destroy the kingdom in one swell blow... for no matter how often The Porch Protector implores trespassers to remove themselves from the lawn, the One True Stanky Robber fells all with a swift sparkle of the boot...
