Description Medium: ink (Micron pen!)

This was a demo drawing for an assignment idea my teacher had. The assignment was to draw an imaginary dinosaur. I was immediately hooked on the concept.
Of course, the first question I asked was, "Does it have to make sense or can it be something out of fantasy?"
She said it could be a fantasy creature as long as it was drawn with realistic enough detail.
My pencil sketch was done in less than two minutes. Then I decided to ink the drawing and, well, it just kept going until it was done. It ended up taking about three days.

Yes, I realize the anatomy is a bit off, but I just wanted him to look huge and blobby but still mobile. I got this concept off of a pokemon, but I can't recall the name. It's one of the new ones. I just liked the idea of putting a tree on a dinosaur's back.

I wanted the whole picture to resemble those messy ink sketches from old textbooks. Those were the days when a scientist would travel to some exotic land and see a strange and wondrous creature. Not being an artist, he would just write down a description and bring it home. Then, some artist who has never seen the creature would try to render what he thinks the scientist is describing. The results could range from surprisingly accurate to hilariously unlikely.

Anyway, I'd better end this ridiculously long comment and let you enjoy the sketchy inkiness of the picture. Hurray for imaginary dinosaurs!!

Pretty fern
I like the variety of skin detail, with the thickened plate-llike skin on the back and stretched/folded skin on the legs

I'd call about every dinosaur imagenary. A great example is eryops, who had a single scientist control the examination of all fossils and was the sole source of information on the ancient amphibian. After his death, other people had the first chance to perform the initial investigation of the fossils, and discovered 3 additional toes on each foot and the limbs would be splayed for swimming insead supporting weight for walking.

Thanks! Yes, I agree about dinosaurs, which is why scientific illustrations and models of dinosaurs often leave me somewhat skeptical. This dinosaur is probably more imaginary than most, I'm sure.

It's like a Venasaur or something.

An early version of bulbasaur? Perhaps that is what you meant.

Really cool drawing regardless.

Thank you! Actually, now that I've done some research, I found that the pokemon I was thinking of was Torterra. I happened to come across it in my cousin's book!

While the dinosaur is the first thing one sees, it's really the trees that end up capturing my attention in the end. The way you did the trunk of the tree on the dino is beautifully done! And each time I look at the plants on the side I find different lil' details to admire

I can just imagine the scientist's report on this being completely misconstrued as this sketch. I can also easily imagine that sketch then getting taught as gospel truth for the next fifty years.

I love the tree-backed dinosaur and the little background detail puts the finishing touch on it for me. Well done.

I would take a guess that the diet of this gentle looking tree loving creature consists mainly of other dinosaurs and humans foolish to think this creature provides shade on a warm summers day.

Thanks for the comment! That reminds me, I was planning to put a second creature sitting under the tree on the dinosaur's back. Oh well, maybe later. By the way, maybe he eats prehistoric marshmallows and green cheese! Who can say?
