Description Well, you all can read, and I think i've ranted enough in making this anyway. Anyway, I'm braindead right now so if it's weird and messy, well, tough. It's my tutorial, and I'll make it as messy as I like

Don't let the preview picture fool you, this tut is on basic crappy CGing and not about painting sceneries on computer monitors or dealing with Attention Deficit Disorder.

If you want to read the tut, stare at the preview image for several minutes, and yell out "I AM THE GREAT HABOOB!!!"
Or just click on that picture. Right on the catgirl. Or anywhere. As long as its on the picture.

Software used: Photochop CS

Thanks so much for the beautiful tut...I'm working on a background piece right now, was wondering if I could ask a question? For the grass brush, when I use it, it doesn't come out all pretty and clear like in your pictures...it looks more like I was doing it with pastels...any idea why? I can't use pen pressure with my tablet, because it has tantrums -.- maybe that's why? (I.e the size jitter is turned off)
Anyway, thanks so much for the tut! Ni! (I laughed)

If you mean that the edges are fuzzy, there are several possibilities: you didn't make the brush (with the lasso tool) on a 100% filled background, or you simply set your opacity too low. When making brushes, keep in mind it samples the pixel areas INSIDE the selection so if the colour inside the selection is too light the brush will also come out too light. If it's blank then there's no colour being sampled as the brush.

And when making the selection make sure it is not feathered as that softens the edge. I don't think feathering can be on by default, so that shouldn't be the problem.

The edges are kinda fuzzy, but its more like the edges are a spray-paint brush - you have to go over and over the spot to make the grass appear (its not on pen pressure or anything). The brush had a dark orange 100% background. I'll check the feathered thing though - thanks very much
Great tutorial! (If my brain worked properly maybe I'd be able to use it )

That's odd, so it's almost like the edges are pixelated or set to "dissolve"? Try remaking the brushes with a dark blue or green background, I never really use orange background so I might check that out later.

I tried again with a dark red maroon-ey type background for the brushes, the effect was lessened but not gone, so I'm thinking it's the colour of the background for the brushes. Weird though. Thanks for the help!

I'm very confused....how do you make the lasso tool so you can draw a selection of specks or...whatever. Once I draw a speck and try to draw a second one or more next to it, the previous one disappears, so I don't really get how you can make a cluster of them like you did. I have Photoshop CS2. Other than that, this is a very neat and funny tutorial that I'm using, except my stupidness on Photoshop slows me down on more new approaches and such.

set the lasso to "add selection" it's on the top left of the bar. Check the buttons on the screenshot for more details.

how do u get a preview for ur pic?....i can't so that XP......also...how do u make layers?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Serio555 In reply to rockleefan440 [2007-06-02 03:48:16 +0000 UTC]

I don't know if DA still have the preview option these days, they used to have an option to submit a preview image

As for layers, the photoshop help menu would have more details

rockleefan440 In reply to Serio555 [2007-06-02 16:24:39 +0000 UTC]

i would put in an image in the uploading area...then a box below that would say 'review' and then there will be a coose button.....and then when i pic a smaller image that will fit, i submit it, and then when i look at it, i click on the preview, and then it would just fullview the preview page XP

Serio555 In reply to TheRoomWithAMoose [2006-12-31 02:39:28 +0000 UTC]

a tablet is a graphic tool that lets you use a pen instead of a mouse, and thus is able to simulate real-life drawing/painting. Wacom is the most famous/popular brand [link]

Nice tutorial!but maybe a little more help on how to draw the tree.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Serio555 In reply to Patternous [2006-10-04 23:54:27 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, but frankly there's nothing except practice that needs to be said on the tree. It's a bunch of twigs put together in a random manner, so there's a million different ways of doing it and there's not really any trick to it other than to simply draw them. I'd suggest to simply look at a real tree and draw it.

Wow! Great tut! (And amusing, also, lol!)
Grass, trees, and other scenery of that nature (oh, don't even get me started on clouds....) has always been something I've had trouble with getting right (which is probably why very few of my devs actually have backgrounds......) and this tut actually made it very easy to understand! Thanks a bunch for posting it!
