Description
Double whammy today for the last two pieces. This "classic" (or "newseen" as the fans call it) set of mechs is intended to refresh the art for some early era mechs.
My goal was to be as faithful as possible to the originals to deliver something recognizable and iconic, yet still come up with something original.
The Valkyrie isn't the prettiest mech, but I think the result came out well enough. Much of the "look" of the original comes from all the surface lines on its simple form.

This Val is really good and cool. So is it or will it be available somewhere for purchase? Or is there a 3d model that can be purchased so one could print it themselves? Would love to add this go my Btech collection.Β

They were at gencon, not sure when/how else they'll be available going forward.

Beautiful work, classic design, though not the fastest (and certainly not the slowest with the Urbanmech and Panther around) it was a great light support mech with the LRM-10 and the jets to get it around. Love the rework while trying to keep it close to the original design.

Was the head design influenced by the bizarre Valk headsculpt form the eighties Plastech set?

Well, part of the whole appeal of Battlemechs for me is that, given the existence of the powerplants and gyros, they're all actually buildable and serviceable machines.

Other than the part where mechs are silly and would lose to tanks most of the time

Isn't it canon that mechs came as a nasty shock to the first tank units to encounter them back pre Star League?

Yes, in the setting. I mean mechs in reality are a bad idea.

I think walker combat vehicles could have excellent uses but huge things like the mechs in Battletech, yeah that is alittle much. I think something more akin to a Heavy Gear would be more sensible. More one-man walking IFV, less giant walking MBT. Sizes would make more sense too. Most Gear are between 4 and 5 meters tall, less than half the size of a light mech.

Well, the setting is a different timeline so "in (our) reality" doesn't apply.

Interesting head design, it resembles combat helicopter cockpit side windows.
Which makes a lot of sense, this way the pilot can see the ground better.
Considering the Valkyrie has jump jets that seems like a perfect choice.

I personally like the idea of a "holographic cockpit" like itΒ΄s shown in some Gundams.
Where the pilot "sees" through the MS by having a full 360Β° monitor as cockpit inside walls.
Or maybe even some highly advanced form of cerebral link where the data of who is where gets fed straight in the pilots mind.
Though while this would make cockpit glasses completely superfluous, the way you drew it here is really good.

Wow, looks like it has an entire Raven for its head.Β
"SHOT FIRST"Β Does anyone other than me have a problem with that???Β
Β
Wait, FASA used the VF-1S Valkyrie from Super-Dimensional Fortress Macross for their board game, but then kept the name of it for their game???Β That's... really odd.Β I've never heard any other Japan-originating name get reused in Battletech before.Β (For example: there is a Spartan in BT, but it's used for a different mech unrelated to the Archer, and the word itself- "spartan"- is generic enough not to raise any copyright concerns.Β Likewise the Tomahawk is completely different from the Warhammer.)

'Shot First' because Han Shot First, this Mechwarrior is obviously the best kind of nerd

Heh, I thought the same thing as well; one of the techs spaypainting a large "HAN" just in front of the properly-decaled "SHOT".

Quite an impressive feat, too, seeing how a Raven is heavier than a Valk!

Thing is most mech names aren't even very unique names, so there's little to do legally. Also FASA should have legally been allowed to call them valks if they wanted by their licensing.

Oh, fair enough; I agree with that!Β It's just... confusing for us robotech Macross fans to have to flip the names around in our heads when we look at them in Battletech.

Is it.. is it referring to how its gun arm gets shot first thing in the battle, leaving it with nothing but a limited supply of missiles?
π: 0 β©: 1
Shimmering-Sword In reply to RenGaulen [2017-12-04 19:12:36 +0000 UTC]
It's a SW reference, somewhat to the cockpit shape.

RenGaulen In reply to Shimmering-Sword [2017-12-07 12:52:11 +0000 UTC]
I figured that it was a 'Han Shot First' reference, but I feel like at least once, every MechWarrior got their mech's arm carrying their best weapon shot off before they could even bring it to bear. (Or, if not the best weapon, at least the one they can shoot more than, what, five times before it runs out of ammo? Six? XD )
