Description DescriptionI never feel right making tutorials because, I don't consider myself a very advanced user of Photoshop. I never feel like I'm in the right place telling other people how to do it.

And I know this isn't an advanced tutorial, but many people don't know how to do this. I also know there are other tutorials out there explaining this exact same thing. . .

I was asked recently how to get the white off sketch images and it reminded me of how often I really am asked that. So have a tutorial for everyone in the future who needs to know.

Pythosart In reply to OddOsprey [2009-07-29 18:45:10 +0000 UTC]

I've done it with PSE! (not the bg, though, just the lineart) Ink your lineart in color (blue, red, orange, etc.), then do the usual scan, upload, etc. Then click and hold the brush tool and select color replacement. Select your color, switch the settings to "color" and go over the sketch, then switch the settings to luminosity and go over it again. If you're confused, I'm sorry. I'll try to explain it better at some point when I actually don't have to log off in 5 seconds...

I don't usually draw things on paper to color them in photoshop. Part of the reason is because I'm really no good at coloring in PS. The other part is that I never knew how to do this!
LoL thanks Shin ;D

I'm sure by now someone else has also mentioned that you can just lock the transparency on your lineart layer to color it as well, but either way gets the same result. xD Awesome tutorial!

feanarth In reply to ??? [2009-07-29 16:17:27 +0000 UTC]

Very cool. I always selected the white with "color range" but your method seems way faster and smoother. Thanks for the input. I always appreciate it when people with the skills show how they pay their bills.

Please note that the "cut mask layer" option you use here (the layer named "line color") is a new feature limited to the Photoshop CS series only.

Older versions like 7.0 however can achieve the same thing by using layer effects (double click a layer) or locking the layer transparency followed by the paint bucket tool.

Shinerai In reply to feanarth [2009-07-29 21:04:39 +0000 UTC]

I think it's pretty cool telling me I can't use "cut mask layer" in Photoshop 7.0, considering I made this tutorial in 7.0
Plus it's called "group with previous".

I appreciate your concern, but even old versions of photoshop (that I know of, I haven't used older than 7.0) can group layers. Since Photoshop Elements v2.0 is also a program I use a lot, I used the grouping method since it isn't capable of using layer masks. So I'm sure no one will have a problem with pressing ctrl+g on their layer.

As for locking the layer; your'e right, that works too. But i dont like coloring directly onto my lineart because I'll often change the color of the lineart just so I can see it- but change the color again later and doing that is more easily controlled when you have grouped layers rather than coloring by hand on the lineart.

feanarth In reply to Shinerai [2009-07-29 23:07:46 +0000 UTC]

WUT!? That's really odd because i could swear that PS7 was able to group layers alright but messed up my "cut mask layers" (i just directly translated that term from my german version) which i saved in the newer PS CS 1-3 Versions. I bet it was a downwards-compatibility problem or i just got something mixed up reeeeaally wrong here.

However, i could've sworn that i read about "group with previous" layers being new in the CS series (together with smart objects). Maybe i just got the function wrong due to the translation. No harm meant, nor did i want to sound self-opinionated.

And you're right - i used to do tons of layer copies to mess with line colors. Using mask layers sounds way more flexible. Thanks for that hint!

Shinerai In reply to feanarth [2009-07-30 02:09:58 +0000 UTC]

it may have been a backwards compatibility problem. I can open files with grouped layers fine in PS7 and can pass them fine to PSE2. So I don't know if it's CS's grouped layer properties or not. Hmm, now I'm curious. I had CS but I deleted it a long time ago ;;

dont worry, I sounded just as opinionated as you

I must admit I was pretty much surprised when I saw this in my inbox. I mean it's a tutorial from Shin!(seeing that you usually prefer not to make such things). ;> But it looks great, and even though I already know about this method, I'm sure many people will find this useful. Nice work overall! I also like the little Shin chibies! :'D

You're not telling anyone how to do anything. You're essentially just showing them how to do it. And it's very helpful. c:

Now do a tutorial on how to colour without it going out of the lines. :U
