You know what? I do a lot of cutting and I have tried the paths tool again and again. It is supposed to be the best for various reasons. But somehow I always seem to mess up and two of the points get connected that aren't supposed to be connected and I end up with a terrible selection, no matter how careful I am. I have found that the free select tool works much better for this sort of thing. Any thoughts?

When you are selecting with the paths tool, do you sometimes go back to change another anchor, before continuing on, dropping the anchors before it?
Basically, you go back to change one of the locations of the previous points, but once you deselect the last point, you start editing from that new location instead, which might be the cause of your problem.

I believe you are probably right. I have read about this tool in "Beginning GIMP", and I know it is more complicated to use than the free select tool, but I suppose I need to practice more and try not to get frustrated when I screw up. Thanks!

You've created a good basic tutorial on "cutting".
I tend to apply the "Free select" tool most of the time. Although the "paths" tool will accomplish the same effect.
I'm not sure if there's any advantages when using either tool for "cutting". If you can think of any, let me know...
Nice work!

For the paths tool, you can always go back and edit it. Also, all your paths are saved along with the file, so even if you go back to use it five years later, you still can with the original path.

I guess there is an advantage to the paths tool that I overlooked, but once an image is made, it's paths aren't really useful.
Unless you intend to use the same image along with any saved paths you might have created and saved.
Do you often save lots of paths?

Skullb3at In reply to Geosammy [2011-08-10 06:25:36 +0000 UTC]
depend on what it is.
I usually save all my files in case I'd ever want to go back and re-use or re-edit them.
So yeah, I do save all my paths.
But paths can be used for more than just photomanipulation, you can also use it for digital painting.

Yes your right about paths being used for painting. You must have lots of saved paths then.
Thanks for your reply's and your tutorial's are really good, you know what your doing.

Okay, I'll leave you a note or comment or something if I think of any tutorials that you might make.
I made 1 tut so far, but I'm not very good at doing that and you seem to really do a great job of it.
I don't have any ideas as of yet, but I might come up with something sooner or later and I'll toss it your way.

So I took a look at your tutorial, and I believe that the reason why you don't think it's so good is that it's really unclear what you are doing. I recommend enlarging some of the images, and cropping them so that only the important parts are shown. You don't need to let the viewer see the entire screen, just the parts that are important.
And I'd recommend screenshot-ing the menu and enlarging it so that it's easier for people to follow.
That's how I usually do mine.
Emphasize on the important things, and the rest can just be shown in text.

Thanks, next time I want to create a tut I'll remember you tips.
I thought my tut was alright until I saw what it looked like here on .

it looked better on my computer.

That seem to be the case with a lot of stuff here.
I guess we have to make compromises, because this is one of the best artist websites around.

I'm going to try this as I was actually asking my friend how to cut something out of a photo and put it in gimp and once there how to cut stuff out of the photo and put on new layer. I'm not sure if I am following you totally but I will see what happens. Thanks!

I have used GIMP extensively before, but I took like a 6 month break and used this to catch up. BUT when I did that whole selection from path thing, a weird mishapen square formed cutting through my image. I followed it to the end and I was left with parts of my horse missing!! I had to redo and NOT USE YOUR DIRECTIONS in order to not have annoying parts missing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

well, if you want to complain.
I'd have you make your own tutorial.
This way has worked for numerous people.
I dislike it when people can only find room to complain in their life, and not help others instead.
Thanks for your comment.
Rudeness isn't advised, (:

I'm sorry, I was just extremely mad. I used to be great at this, and I took two hours to cut out the horse, when GIMP messed it up, I just lashed out at the last tut I had used.

It sounds like you went backwards on a dot to move it into a smoother place, and then didn't click on the most recent dot, to keep the lines moving. That will happen if you backtrack and then don't go to the most recent dot again.

O_0 You have to go around the whole horse with the path. Did you do that?
