... as an outside observer I come into this not knowing the backstory or if it really needs one for me... based on the colors and textures that you have provided, this painting draws me in and offers me that there is truth in one succinct message: love will overcome fear...
... and suddenly everything else makes sense...

Oh my god this is insanely beautiful.. The color scheme reminds me so much of =notmystyle 's work, and also of winter
this is the perfect end of december painting to look at.. the way you painted the sky looks incredible, and looking at Darragh makes me smile
I can't even get over the colors.. ;____; This is just so awesome

Thanks, pal! I went back and forth about submitting it late last night, but finally just figured nobody's gonna get their inbox cleared out for another week, and this was my last painting of 09, so time's up...

No one else has mentioned that, but that's what I think, too-- there's such a Starsky and Hutch yin and yang to these two...

Exactly!
what kind of wings does Darragh have?

You're going to love it so much... One season only, and then the theatrical release, "Serenity"...

My goodness, your photorealism is as surreal as this image. That girl on the bike is amazingly shaded--and that bike!

I get to see new work from you!! I don't know these lucky deviants, but I love Be Xi's sort of spirit guide Darragh and the surreal world you created for them . . . beautifully done, Sam. Awesome color choices, too

I love how you did *MerelyMarquis , the tiny legs and wings make it adorable
I just wish there was a bit more of space above their heads, but that's all. Excelllent work

Thanks, pal!
I agree about the need for more headspace-- this is the nearest I've ever come to the edge of the actual masonite-- it was just one of those things...

Oh I know, I've lost track of all the times I've come closer to finish a painting and it's then when I see the figures are practically coming out of the frame. It's the typical "oh shit" moment

I'm always so much better off if I just tape off at least an inch worth of border to begin with, but this piece broke more than one of my usual rules...

Have you gotten to play around with any of Ampersand's art boards? [link] I like 'em a lot, but I think my next painting might be back to canvas...

laurart In reply to SRaffa [2009-12-29 01:16:27 +0000 UTC]
I haven't seen that brand here, but I do use MDF boards a lot. They're quite cheap compared to canvas and I like how the material flows in it

I really do love Ampersand's Claybordยฎ a lot-- it might be interesting to see how gouache sits on it...

Their faces are so alive and joyful that I just kept looking from one to another for quite some time. And then there go these magical surroundings. I can somehow see the road stretching far away behind the girl, with these whirling vinyls, playing different kinds of music on each of them. Fantastic work, as always!
