Description
This song has been sticking inside my head when I was drawing this: www.youtube.com/watch?v=nSXlkc…Let's disregard the comic plot timeline and draw some sci-fi prothean and sci-fi oravores.
This is Vahana (Prothean race, Exemplar of Protection) and Alancier (Oravores race, Exemplar of Vengeance) before the Prothean Reaper War.
They're bviously fighting against something, not sure what it is. They've fought so many wars even the creator had lost count.
It's just good ol' times of pure badass-ness and no politics and all those crazy stuffs, life was simple.
So they're war-buddies, like I've said.
This inter-species liaison just has to work, Javik, stop disapproving.
EDIT: Added more action elements into it so it looks like they're fighting instead of just posing.

10 years and no changes in appearances?!
That's a huge no being shoved right at my face, I'm glad I didn't buy it.

yeah....they said it was kind of for the sake for people to recognize cosplay but...yeah..it's uh...kinda creepy. Oh and Anders...DO NOT GET ME STARTED ON ANDERS!

It's just an excuse... if they are consistent in design elements, fans will immediately be able to pick things up right when they see the "new" character. I've read comics and been seeing fan arts that are about characters' life time, and the appearances look consistent no matter which allegiance or social status they've switched to.
I'm getting a little bit angry at this, don't mind me. I hate seeing lazy stuffs and illogical reasons coming from the official voices.

Yeah it was pretty lame. While the cosplay is cool, I mean people put a lot of hard work into it but at the same time it's the same outfits all the time. If you're as one character who is visual distinct without clothes, people will notice it.

Amen to that.
Like, seriously, even Sailor Moon has all those cool outfits in different generations/series... and she actually grows up.
In terms of character design, it's all about "signature colors"... (say like Kaiden would be flag blue and Tali will be royal purple).
Compared to many titles, DA 2 was one that has been published in a relatively short amount of time in between with DA 1. So that might be the reason of the dev team not having enough time to design new clothes. (But still just 1 outfit should be sufficient, just like what they do for the alternative outfits... I'd want to stop comparing but there are studios out there that are capable in getting 20+ outfits done within 2 years just for a version update for their MMORPG.)

Exactly.I mean while Tali's Purple would be more along the lines of the visor, the grays and everything of her suit were less distinct, as she grew older her hood changed and when they introduced more quarians you could definitely figure out who was who based just on look alone. But they had a reason to keep a similar suit, lack of resources. And you are right on the lack of time between DA and DA: 2. There was barely a year turn around. And PC players were lucky with the mods and everything, but when in the first game you knew why they would have to keep a certain bit of armor constantly. It was war! Of course some characters were a guard, some were Chantry members, those made sense and of course NPC's don't need much work. I mean in Mass Effect you know they put out little costume packs that were kind of fun to use and the characters do change over the course of the series. That being said when you were in a war it's military standard dress code and the like but this is over the course of weeks not a DECADE, and the main characters who you romanced had one minor change to their outfit a red sash and family insignia after you romance the character which again takes a FULL DECADE to fully come to fruition. Well you have kind of a love scene but for the full amount of emotion to hit the character you romanced is a decade in the making. And there was supposed to be another DLC out this year for DA2 but they scrapped it to put more time into DA3 so I think it's a fair trade. Say what you will about the sequel. Every game has its problems but again if they can take what they learned from the failures of one project and apply it to another project and make it better than fantastic.
Hell I have my own problems with my writing. and keeping everything straight in that stuff so *shakes head* while it may not be as big as a multi-million dollar game I understand the concept of making characters memorable with a signature look, but at the same time we know who they are and people change and grow and I think changes to the character design on occasion in this game would have helped tremendously.
One funny line in that game though was you go to this one place SO MANY times for missions that a character goes "Why do we keep coming back here?" That's kind of sad when even the writing team makes fun of it.

I'd say character design should be treated as separate discipline. It works a lot like branding a product or a celebrity, it's just the subject is a fictional entity. It works a bit easier and more convenient with drawings than texts for obvious reasons. But I actually enjoy reading texts because it's not about appearances that had branded a character, but the way how he/she interacts and thinks within the story. And sculpting the personality of a character is just waaaaaay harder than just drawing the appearances.
And I actually approve the changes/amendments for game sequels. It shows that the development team does care about the integrity of their creation and is willing to take a more objective view in their work as the creator.
And thanks for telling me that there's gonna be a DA3... I didn't know that at all.

Yeah DA 3 will actually follow the same concept of Mass Effect where choices from one and two will effect certain events. HOW we don't know yet but hopefully again they learned from *points at ME3 collectors edition* LOL. And you are right character design is it's own discipline. You can have a rather generic story, but if you can make the interactions of the characters memorable then you've done the job right. I was reading articles on how critics keep complaining about formulas and formulas actually can work to a great advantage if done properly. I'm going to bring up say, The Avengers as a basic concept. Simple story but how they got it to work was very well done.
But it's like you said, you like texts because we don't have to base everything off a visual medium in terms of a drawing it is a description. It's like I said in chapter 4 about the fan art thing you responded to. I have something I've written and how it plays out in a scene in my head but I'd like to see how other people interpret it. It's like, i forget the writers name, but he stated that it is the duty of the writer to make he reader get a reaction from the experiencing their work. Granted this is a heavy paraphrase but I'm hoping the concept rings sound. Now do I always take on that responsibility, no, but if someone can get something from my work than so be it.
And yeah, I like it when people stop, look at things and say "Wow, we did a shit job on this." and try to do better. I do it all the time. Sometimes I'll go through fifteen versions of a sentence before nailing it, and then sometimes I screw that up because I leave an extra word in it. I just found a few doing that myself.

From this angle the big quy looks similiar to a kossith from Dragon Age.
Just the head. Reminds me somehow of the Arishok.
I bet they can kick some ass.

I never played Dragon Age... I've wanted to play it but somehow every time when I come across a copy, I'm always broke.
They kick ass big time.

It's called badass art style.

When I have more ideas of drawing something badass-ish, I will. :3
You know... this was supposed to be one of the panels of a strip in Act 2... something about recalling past battle memories and good old times.
But I got SO carried away.

Randomness surprises people, I like to surprise people.
Ah, and I actually like how Alancier 'shields' Vahana with his tail, it's a subtle thing. And somehow the two can share abilities for a moment, which enables Alancier to scorch every target with biotic power, even the out-of-sight ones. It's actually Vahana's 3rd ability, but it only works on a handful of individuals.

Yeah. I noticed. I rly like his tail heh. Fun.
Oh btw. Ppl saying he looks like *insert something* .....seriously, what doesn't look like something, which is already out there, these days?

Yeah and it's more relaxing that now my professors told me I can just use bullet points with my thesis proposal. So I'm dumping a lot of sophisticated-looking random stuffs into that paper.
When I was in art school, our professor just simply told us that "There is no 'originality' anymore, because we all get inspiration from something else, or we simply get 2 or more past art movements and mesh them to become a 'new' trend."
It sounds extreme but I actually buy it. After all, that's how the creative/artistic fields ended up sorting certain design/style elements into certain kinds of genre.
But it's interesting that nobody seemed to be able to coin the exact source of my inspiration in designing the Archknights. I think I should be glad.
