Description
My first tutorial:Digital coloring in Photoshop (basics), by using a mask.
I used Photoshop CS3 for this tutorial.
It's really just the basics. Shading, coloring outlines, etc. will be explained in other tutorials.
There already are so many tutorials out there, but... well, now it's so many + 1.

This tutorial was SOOOO helpful! 1 thing though---How do you add layers?

It depends on the program you're using (not all programs have this option). If you use Photoshop, there is a "layer" button in the menu or the layer window.

How do you get the nice lines for your outline? I can never get those solid, crisp looking lines..

TaniDaReal In reply to Pootsforever [2009-05-05 09:09:57 +0000 UTC]
Draw the original picture/outlines in a bigger version (no matter if on big paper or using a large image file on the computer). If you reduce the size of your picture at the end, your outlines will automatically look smoother again.

do you know how to extract a lineart from the white bg if you used a scanned image? i don't have a tablet to trace my lines on the computer, so i'm trying to avoid the squwiggly stuff I know i'll end up with if I were to use my laptop's touchpad. < broke college kid

Now we just need a tutorial on how to do BG's with this method. I mean color behind the image. How do you do that with the mask?
π: 0 β©: 1
TaniDaReal In reply to RavenDemonChild [2008-11-26 08:38:17 +0000 UTC]
Actually the same way, as you can select anything you like with a mask. e.g. if you do not invert your selection (to select the wolf, like explained in the tutorial), you will just have selected everything around the wolf (the background).
Or - another method (what I'd do) - if you have your mask only for the wolf layer (like in the tutorial), you can simply draw your background on a new layer (without mask) below/under the wolf layer. You can draw anything you like there, the masked wolf layer above will not be affected by it. So you don't neccessarily need another mask for the background.

Even though I sort of piece together what I do from a variety of different sources, it's always interesting to see how some of my favorite artists do things.
And outlines with transparent backgrounds have been a must with me for years! So useful if you want something besides plain old black lineart I've always recommended that to Photoshop newbies
