Description
My first tutorial:Digital coloring in Photoshop (basics), by using a mask.
I used Photoshop CS3 for this tutorial.
It's really just the basics. Shading, coloring outlines, etc. will be explained in other tutorials.
There already are so many tutorials out there, but... well, now it's so many + 1.

Thanks a lot for this tutorial. All I've really used was different layers for coloring.. how do you usually do the outline? I usually trace it out, which makes it pretty uneven, and not very smooth.
But I've never used the masks, either.
And these steps work the same way with Photoshop 7, right?

These steps should be about the same in PS7 (I used version 7 some years ago), yes.
I usually (re)draw the outlines in Photoshop (tracing the scanned sketch on a new layer) by using my graphic tablet and the Photoshop brush tool (about 4px brush width). I always use a big image size. My outlines aren't always 100% smooth either, but when I reduce the picture in the end, this will already help a lot making your outlines smoother.

Oh okay, that's basically what I do too, trace it with a brush on a new layer. So I'm doing something right

Could you make one for Adobe Photoshop Elements 3? I tried following this guide, but the programs are just too different.

This is fantastic! I've always wondered how to color lines like that (I found another tutorial for that which involved several different layers and layer properties, very confusing). This makes it so quick and easy.

Gutes Tutorial - aber Coloring-Tutorials gibts irgendwie wie Sand am Meer, warum nicht mal eins, dass etwas mehr Einblick ins Zeichnen an sich gibt? Ich wΓ€r sicher nicht der einzige, der das interessant fΓ€nd.

Ich werd schon noch mehr Tutorials machen, aber ich wollte einfach irgendwo anfangen (mit was einfachem), auch wenn's das schon oft gibt. Ich wollt nicht gleich mit was kompliziertem anfangen, was viele sofort abhΓ€ngt. Lieber mehrere, kΓΌrzere Tutorials.

There's a free download thats like photoshop. It's called GIMP.
