Description A couple people have requested this tutorial and I figured, hey, why not help out. Let me know if you don't understand something. I'm sure it's a bit confusing but it's difficult to explain some things especially if people may not know how to use photoshop well. I did my best

UPDATE: OMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMG DD THANK YOU SO MUCH I'm so happy I could help so many people ;_;

I was wondering how one of my friends was able to draw plaid artwork in her designs. Now I know why! XD

When you draw the plaid lines, do you draw with the brush tool or the pen tool?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Tetiel In reply to Penlink [2012-08-11 20:15:17 +0000 UTC]

I use the pen tool. I know a lot of people probably say it's a nono, but I can't make very straight lines without it. Never have been able to xD

I was going to use a plaid pattern for my OC's plaid, but then I'm like, "Aww, heck no. It would look totally unnatural."

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Tetiel In reply to bubblidreamz [2012-02-05 02:39:45 +0000 UTC]

Good choice! It often is! I've been able to use patterns so it looks natural, but if you're able to, I find it's always best to make your own. I'm glad to help out <3

Wow, that's so handy, thank you!
I'm going to use this if I ever need to do plaids.
Oh, I have a question too! Would you suggest dropping the opacity of the plaid layer, or dropping the opacity of the brush? Or does it matter?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Tetiel In reply to MaruChiku [2010-04-17 04:53:23 +0000 UTC]

Opacity of the actual layer has always just been easier for me. That way you can adjust things after the fact

MaruChiku In reply to Tetiel [2010-04-17 05:05:21 +0000 UTC]

Ohh, that makes sense.
Thank you!

chorvaqueen [2010-04-07 03:41:19 +0000 UTC]

A bit nitpicking though, (maybe it's my screen), I find the plaid design standing out too much that it doesn't look that natural. Maybe it's because of some illusion created by the background and well, the choice of cloth color.

But overall, it's a good tutorial but it does need perseverance.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Tetiel In reply to chorvaqueen [2010-04-07 14:04:12 +0000 UTC]

The background does make it pop out for sure because it's neutral. It could also be MY screen that I work on, actually. I'm always working on my laptop which has caused people with probably better monitors to say my colors look odd. For example, some of my blacks have looked green to them xD But to be honest, I think it's the fabric color I chose in the first place. I tend to color a little too saturated sometimes.

chorvaqueen In reply to Tetiel [2010-04-07 14:50:59 +0000 UTC]

All I could say is it somehow emulates a glossy plastic finish, like those skirts you get when you buy a barbie doll ) Hey, they are hawt!

Maxi-knows-2-much [2010-01-09 08:52:49 +0000 UTC]

I am a bit confused sorry^^
So what do you actually do to get the lines one the skirt?
Do you take the photo as a reference and then you draw in the lines, or what is the secret here?
Never heard of this plaid-stuff

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Tetiel In reply to Maxi-knows-2-much [2010-01-09 16:00:43 +0000 UTC]

Oh no, you do them on a completely different layer. Each line is on a different layer. The horizontal lines are on a different layer than the vertical lines for example. As far as plaid I don't use a photo as a reference because plaid has a generic box pattern so it's not too complicated. Haha, just time consuming xD
