Description A couple people have requested this tutorial and I figured, hey, why not help out. Let me know if you don't understand something. I'm sure it's a bit confusing but it's difficult to explain some things especially if people may not know how to use photoshop well. I did my best

UPDATE: OMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMG DD THANK YOU SO MUCH I'm so happy I could help so many people ;_;

Ok, so you draw each line yourself??
Because at first I thought that you somehow merge the photo into your artwork

Oh, no. I was just showing the example of what plaid looks like with the photo. I draw each line myself because otherwise you wouldn't be able to incorporate the folds naturally.

I instantly love you for this. There's nothing quite like a pattern that actually follows the fabric. You see drawings, and I find especially in graphic novels, you see "cheap" plaids, stuff that's just put slapped onto the whole article of clothing in question. Stuff like this is wonderful though.

I've never managed to pull of anything plaid-like in any sort of past attempt, at least not very well. I think my biggest problem is probably the fact that I'm simply not very good at drawing parallel lines. Any tips on how I might be able to get better at that? Plaid's always quite nice, and I wouldn't at all mind using such patterns a bit here and there when I draw stuff.

Tetiel In reply to Houkou-NRL [2010-01-25 20:36:42 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I totally know what you mean. I think it's much easier to slap it on though xD Too much work to do it on every page. Well with parallel lines I cheat a little. I use the pen tool to basically "draft" it and I'm able to move them really easily if it doesn't look right.

How do you do the gradient in only the skirt?
-total photoshop n00b-

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KikaiSaigono In reply to Mossyflower [2010-01-09 02:19:47 +0000 UTC]

Use the wand tool on the lineart layer, and expand the pixels why 2 or 3 (under select --> modify, i think), then switch to the layer you want to color the skirt on and use the gradient tool

(sorry, I'm not the one who did this tutorial, but i just saw your comment and thought to answer XD)

Such an interesting and well-done tutorial! Erasing the lines in the last step was especially helpful, and I think I'll be able to apply it to other areas of drawing, as well

Thank you!

hey, have you ever given this method for achieving "material wrap"a try? I assume you're using Photoshop - I invite you to try it out and let me know what you think!

Tetiel In reply to JoshClarkeDraws [2010-01-25 20:16:39 +0000 UTC]

Actually that's a great idea. I think that would be really useful for digital paintings since it adds more realism. I typically use this method since it's cell shading and I think that method would look odd. I had never realized you could shape it like that though. I'll definitely try that.
