The saddest part of the Cutlass is that if it had been fitted with better engines it would have been an excellent airplane. I do wonder what could have been with slightly bigger wings and a fuselage able to fit the Pratt and Whitney J57 engine....

it did have some other issues as well, structural and systems-wise,but the basic design{Junkers,Luftwaffe-1946!} was actually good. just a bit too far ahead of it,s time.

Why "gutless"?

an old nickname for the plane,it was somewhat underpowered.

I believe these were on my uncle's carrier in 1957. USS Ranger.

they probably were, but it saw a very limited service in the fleet.

Toasters? I didn't think they were that hot. Engines were way underpowered for this aircraft. My Dad has a photo or two of these at North Island Naval Air Station in the mid fifties. They were already shoved off to the side.

if only.....? what a shame Cutlass never got a fair chance to live up to it,s full potential!

Another aircraft betrayed by its Westinghouse toasters - erm, engines. One wonders what could have been with a set of reliable engines...

yeah,like a nice pair of Rolls-Royces!

kanyiko In reply to TomCatDriver [2007-05-15 15:02:56 +0000 UTC]

... a pair of RR Avons comes to mind - bet it wouldn't have been half as gutless!

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

TomCatDriver In reply to kanyiko [2007-05-15 17:16:23 +0000 UTC]

certainly not! that,s as much power as a Caravelle airliner! and only one seat? can we say Rocket-Ship?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

kanyiko In reply to TomCatDriver [2007-05-15 19:32:57 +0000 UTC]

I guess we can, but in the end, we'll never know.

...

Sometimes, I look at the list of aircraft killed by the Westinghouse toasters, and wonder whose side they were on anyway... <_<

wasnยดt many time in service, because in that time the US navy creates 1 plane by day XD

very early Sparrows! Cutlass never used operationally, very short career in the fleet.

DingoPatagonico In reply to TomCatDriver [2007-05-13 06:54:43 +0000 UTC]

in the 50s,jet planes were like computers are now! it seemed like new stuff was coming out every week! we just don,t see that anymore. way too expensive!

DingoPatagonico In reply to TomCatDriver [2007-05-13 07:54:45 +0000 UTC]

totally right!

TomCatDriver In reply to DingoPatagonico [2007-05-13 08:05:09 +0000 UTC]

i don,t think we,ll ever see planes being developed like that again! but that was a simpler time,it was. also a matter of justification, due to the Soviet Threat and Cold War tensions.

i had no idea the Cutlass would be so popular with everybody! i do have some more kits of it from Lindberg and Fujimi,i guess i should build them and post them here! and maybe BuAer might want to take another look at the old bird and consider an updated version for service? we,d love to see them on the carriers again, wouldn,t we?

somewhere in my archives,i have a "gag shot" of Cutlasses in VF-111 markings on a carrier deck, with 2 seat cockpits and armed with Phoenix missiles! just a "what if" kind of thing....you have to admit, from some angles, the Cutlass does look just a bit like an F-14? Hmmm. if only.....!
