Description
Northrop F-5E Tiger II,US Air Force Aggressor {those "Commie Types"},c.1980s,used for Air Combat Manuvering training in the USAF,s "Red Flag" program at Nellis AFB,Nevada. this type was also used by the US Navy at the Fighter Weapons School{TOP GUN} at NAS Mirimar{the former "Fightertown,USA"} for the same purpose as it was very similar in size and performance to the Soviet MiG-21 "Fishbed" fighter-interceptor. in 1986,a few Navy F-5s were painted glossy black with "Unfriendly Nation" markings and starred in the blockbuster motion picture "Top Gun" as the mysterious/secret MiG-28 "Fantasy", against "Maverick" and "Iceman"Related content

Funny I just watched Top Gun the other day. They also had these at Clark AB in the P.I. Used to guard them and others.

Yep, those Commies with their weird jets, who would ever fly, much less manufacture, such a odd plane?

not odd at all, really. the Northrop F-5 series were actually rather simple and basic in design and construction, but excellent in performance. very inexpensive and cost-effective too.

I know this plane. Since it had flying abilities like MiGs , it was used for training.

almost identical handling to a MiG-21. i saw one once that had a paint job designed to give the F-5 a silhouette just like the MiG too.

Did it have red stars ? If so, it must have looked awful.

no markings at all, just painted in a pattern of dark and light grey to create the MiG-21 outline.

Stunning. What is that thing on the bottom? Makes it look like a wasp about to lay an egg.

it,s just an extra fuel tank to extend mission time. many fighters use them, very little room for internal fuel cells.{and very thirsty engines!} external tanks can be jettisoned if need be,such as engaging in combat.

whatever they used was as close as possible to known current Soviet Bloc camo schemes. some were air-superiority blues/greys,others overland or desert sand/brown.

most were simply adapted to fit the local terrain they would be operating in,and some actually were very attractive on the planes.
