everybody! it,s an ATC regulation,for traffic control/tracking purposes in congested airspace.

but i think its loosely enforced because i seen planes go faster below 10000 on flightaware logs.

depends on the airport,and it,s level of traffic and congestion. some are stricter than others.

European airspace is very strictly controlled,and traffic separation is tight,they,re very careful about RVSM minimums!{500 ft between flight levels!} it,s a Crowded Sky!

too close for me...! on the radio,some planes,such as widebodies,are referred to as "Heavy" by their crews and ATC,but the A380 is referred to as a "Super",and it,s a good idea to give one of those monstrosities a nice,wide berth! lots and lots of jetwash,wake turbulence and wingtip vortices! i found out many years later that one of my HS classmates who became a corporate pilot was killed along with 7 others in a Cessna Citation when they "tailgated" a 757...

wow thats horrible. im sure you know the movie "Pushing Tin"? in that movie they stand on the runway while a 747 lands i think.

i never did see that one!{strange as it may seem!} i do remember a story about a fully loaded 18-wheeler that was driving on an airport service road that got behind a 747 that was going up to full takeoff power,and was picked up and hurled like a toy!

about 30 of us {pilots and fltatts} got together one evening,"commandeered" a company airport bus{one of the stews used to be a NYC bus driver!},and went in full uniform.....you can imagine the looks/reactions we were getting.....!

some MDD products were better than others....the ORIGINAL DC-10{4 engines,double-deck} was actually a good design,and probably might have beaten the 747 in many ways,but MD,s management didn,t want to "sink" the projected costs into development. the final result was in many ways,a cheap knockoff of the L-1011....
