we all have one,but it,s the FAA,s opinion that counts.....!

That's true.

sure is. FAA is a stodgy Government Bureaucracy that,s about 40 years behind the industry at any given time, but you,ve got to play the game their way,or you don,t play at all......!

Ahaha... I'm so envious! I'd love to get into commercial aviation once I can afford to get into a flight school[would love to fly MD-11s for FedEx or any other cargo company, but they might not be around by the time I'm able to fly one].

And just because I've always wanted to ask a commercial pilot this; have you ever had any close calls/incidents during your career?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TomCatDriver In reply to GearOtter [2008-12-23 09:34:21 +0000 UTC]

Close calls....we all get our share of those,it just goes with the job. if flight school costs are a problem, would you consider military service? they,ll take a piece out of your hide, but provide plenty of good training, and all Government-subsidized!

affirmative.....

ShaneJensenToons In reply to TomCatDriver [2008-11-30 03:57:58 +0000 UTC]

That is SOOOO cool. I've always wanted to get a chance to talk to an actual airline captain. I may have some question for you later. I couldn't imagine flying every day. I only fly once a year or few years and get really nervous each time I fly. I love it and enjoy the whole experience, but still get nervous. Must be like second nature to you pilots like driving a car for me, huh?

TomCatDriver In reply to ShaneJensenToons [2008-11-30 06:02:30 +0000 UTC]

there,s really nothing to be nervous about. you,re safer on the "invisible highway" than on the asphalt one! all handled and controlled by serious pros, and lots of highly sophisticated Air Traffic Control equipment. i,m actually more nervous on the ride coming into or going home from the airport, thanks to soooo many idiots with big, ugly SUV,s who don,t even really know how to drive them properly in the first place, and are just so into their important little cel-phone conversations to have any sort of Situational Awareness...!

ShaneJensenToons In reply to TomCatDriver [2009-07-22 01:29:13 +0000 UTC]

I know this is a late reply, but I'm finally going through my old messages in my inbox. lol

Anyway, I know there isn't anything to be nervous about and that it's safer than driving and all. I think most of it is because it's something I don't do very often and I usually get nervous of things in general that are out of the ordinary. Once I'm in the air I do enjoy the flight and find the whole thing very fascinating. I find the takeoffs and landings to be the most exciting, mostly the takeoffs. I love the sounds of the engines spooling up followed by the increased speed. Great stuff.

But yeah, I agree. The crew are very professional and you don't have to worry about careless drivers around you talking on their cell phones.

I got to sit in the left seat of a UA 767! It was before my flight from LHR to ORD! The double bonus of that experience was that it was the United Star Alliance colour scheme plane!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TomCatDriver In reply to NinjaPickle [2008-09-25 20:37:09 +0000 UTC]

what type of 767 was it? we have the -200 and -400ER series.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

NinjaPickle In reply to TomCatDriver [2008-09-25 20:55:53 +0000 UTC]

If memory serves me correctly, I think it was a -200ER and I THINK the N-number was N248UA! I looked it up on the internet when I got back and found out it was a one of a kind special paint job!!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TomCatDriver In reply to NinjaPickle [2008-09-25 21:32:54 +0000 UTC]

we had one of our 777,s{014} in a special paint scheme by artist Peter Max to celebrate The New Milleneium for New York City2000 but it was recently stripped and refinished in standard Company colours. lots of 767-200 and -300,s out there, but we and Delta were the only customers for the -400 series, only 38 examples were produced altogether.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

NinjaPickle In reply to TomCatDriver [2008-09-25 21:34:57 +0000 UTC]

Oooh! I seen Peter max in Denver like four years ago!!! Continental Airlines right? Never flew DL's 767's though! Those -400's are pretty long!!!!!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TomCatDriver In reply to NinjaPickle [2008-09-25 21:53:46 +0000 UTC]

the -400 is almost a 777....uses the same wheel/tyre/brake assemblies, and windows/windshields as well as many of the same systems and components. a shame about Peter Max......but it was an agreement between COAir and NYC that was for a certain time, and it ran out. and the actual paint finish was still in good condition too.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

NinjaPickle In reply to TomCatDriver [2008-09-25 21:56:28 +0000 UTC]

Thats probably why they only made a few of them! No sense in building something that closely resembles another product! So the -400 uses a 777 FBW system too?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TomCatDriver In reply to NinjaPickle [2008-09-25 22:30:08 +0000 UTC]

yes,the flight control systems and Airinc buses,AIMS are very similar, along with many other components, the Good,Ol Boeing "Parts Bin" concept of using something that,s already there, saves a lot of time and money.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

NinjaPickle In reply to TomCatDriver [2008-09-27 16:24:40 +0000 UTC]

Cool! I've heard of the "parts bin" thing alot! Boeing's been doing that since WWII I think! Also 707,727, and 737 all have similar nose sections and fuselage diameters to keep manufacturing costs down!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TomCatDriver In reply to NinjaPickle [2008-09-27 16:51:28 +0000 UTC]

707,720,727,and 737 all had IDENTICAL nose sections{windscreens, radomes, etc.,all interchangeable},as well as all types and the 757 shared the same and original fuselage cross-section of the 707,just in different lengths. just a simple matter of "slicing the Seattle Sausage" to the length needed.....!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

NinjaPickle In reply to TomCatDriver [2008-09-27 16:54:00 +0000 UTC]

Indeed! LOL! You can cut something out or put something in!!!! Just look at all those different 737's!!!

TomCatDriver In reply to NinjaPickle [2008-09-27 19:26:29 +0000 UTC]

"nuke got it! B-757-224,COAir. sorry about no pilots,to take pics of personnel i needed express permission from Human Resources and our HR manager was,nt avail at the time. even a Captain,s gotta play by the rules!"

Haha, at KLM we can just photograph away at anything we like in our planes and around our planes when they are in our hangars. Only when the planes are outside at the gates we can't take pictures of them. But nice photograph, i have a bunch of cockpit shots in my album aswell.

TomCatDriver In reply to kaasjager [2008-06-03 17:24:43 +0000 UTC]

at least i managed to take some pics before they really started cracking down on those silly rules. some of them had to do with taking pics of other employees without prior consent, considered Invasion of Privacy, and a sure way to get in big trouble. other reasons were about airport security, very severe in the USA since 9/11.

TomCatDriver In reply to concaholic [2008-06-12 05:39:52 +0000 UTC]

747-800.......? if they do go ahead with it. back in the early 70,s,the Japanese proposed a full doubledecker version of the 747 for intercity short range hops as a pure people-mover {small carry-on luggage only, purses and briefcases}that could carry aprox. 1000 passengers! back then,Boeing hemmed and hawed over the development/certification cost of redesigning the fuselage, but it may yet happen still......!

not yet. if a kit came out,AHS would be among the first to stock them. but we can always hope! and BTW,i swear i,ll never do another one of those Revell kits of that A380 beast again......possibly if and only if Hasegawa made one in their 1/200 LoveLiner series.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

concaholic In reply to TomCatDriver [2008-06-23 03:24:48 +0000 UTC]

I take it that A380 was pretty big then, just like that Concorde?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TomCatDriver In reply to concaholic [2008-06-23 07:00:39 +0000 UTC]

not so much big,but just a very bitchy kit to build, very complicated and delicate landing gear, also very thin-walled plastic on the larger parts{warpage and lots of fit problems, needed a lot of added reinforcing structure} as well as brittle and tricky decals. not a particularly pleasant build, for sure.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

concaholic In reply to TomCatDriver [2008-06-25 03:34:33 +0000 UTC]

I'm curious, how do you reinforce a plastic model? Do you put putty or something inside it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TomCatDriver In reply to concaholic [2008-06-25 08:57:33 +0000 UTC]

strips of sheet styrene and LocTite 495 Super Bonder{aerospace grade} along the inner seams, adds tremendous strength by creating a double lap joint in addition to the original butt joint. also adds a lamination to the original wall for added stiffness of structure.

might take more than a few years. i lucked out and went right into Big Jets as a Flight Engineer when we still had lots of planes with 3-seat cockpits,but now,most start out as as F/O,s {very low-paid!} for a regional/commuter carrier. {Puddle-Jumpers}
