Description
The easy way to do this.Note that I've used the latest, Japanese language only, version of PMD for this tutorial, but the function also exists in the older English language version. It's in the same place in the menu system (Edit>Bone>MasterParentBone).
IMPORTANT
If you are using the English version of the PMD Editor, the name of the bone on the Japanese side is incorrect. The function still works, but replace the label on the Japanese side with the correct Japanese characters: [ 全ての親 ]

Speaking of bones, something went wrong while editing my Future Style Rin. When I imported my edited model into MMD to test it out (with a ballistic vest and hat on), I was shocked to discover all the bones are out of whack (the leg bones were moved off of their original location). What did I do wrong? When I imported clothes like vests and other armor into pmx editor, I highlighted them in order to move them into position and into the right spots. But somewhere in that time frame, the bones moved as well. Heres the Future Style Rin I attempted to edit. cartoondude135.deviantart.com/…

When you import parts to the PMDe, make sure that you set it up so that the new parts don't overwrite the existing parts.

Make sure you only have one mother bone. But yeah, something is wrong based on your description.

This helped my model! Thanks! I have another issue I would like to ask you (not relating to this tutorial but to mmd) I have a Windows 10 computer and MME doesn't work at all. However, it worked on my Windows 8 computer.

Unfortunately, I have no knowledge of Win10 other than that it is problematic.

If you're still having this problem, I've had it too! It's caused by a "critical windows 10 update" which isn't critical at all. It just messes with the exe additions, therefore making MME not work! The only solution I've found is to refresh your computer to this stage. I don't believe it messes w/ your files, though!

Are the mother and groovy bones the same?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Trackdancer In reply to Aelamas [2015-12-10 18:44:36 +0000 UTC]
No they are not.
Mother Bone: is a coordinate location modifier
Groove Bone: is a compliment to the center bone usually used to move the main body in a contrary direction

It is used to custom set the model's 'world origin'; so it is useful for positioning the model.

Trackdancer In reply to derpsex101 [2015-06-27 17:25:44 +0000 UTC]
Models should NEVER be rotated using the model bone during a motion sequence. We downloaded motions like "Anything You Can Do", the motion data itself should take care of any rotations needed.
All the motherbone does (and should be used for) is to set/customize the model's own world origin and associated coordinate set relative to MMD's global coord system. Think of it like this as you need to wrap your head around the concept to fully understand the advantages of the motherbone.
By default, a model's coord system is the same as the global coord system. Therefore, a model's bones are positioned and moved relative to the global coord system. This works fine if the model is working/moving around the global origin point which is 0x. 0y. 0z. However, if the model's movements are centered around another point, preparing motions for the model can be a major pain as everything is centered around the global origin point. This is where the motherbone comes in really handy as it can reset the model's own origin point to any other point in 3D space. Once you've done this, the model's bone coords are calculated around it's motherbone as it was the global origin point. Sorry if I didn't explain this too clearly, but the concept is actually very simple.

Do you know how to edit motion files using the MMD frames display? If so the fix is very, very easy.
Look for occurrences of registrations of the mother bone's position on all frames AFTER frame 0 and delete them.

HELP! When I Use A Motion The Models Parent Bone Don`t Move It Keep Stay In The Center. But Without Using Any Motion Such As Posing, It Works Fine.
( Sorry For Bad English And Bad explanation )

Trackdancer In reply to MMDFORLIFE39 [2015-05-02 18:50:29 +0000 UTC]
The model's parent bone (mother bone or root bone) doesn't move unless the motion moves it for some reason. Moving the parent bone is rare. It is usually only used to locate the model in 3D space.

Trackdancer In reply to MMDFORLIFE39 [2015-05-04 20:16:10 +0000 UTC]
If your model doesn't turn per your description the most likely cause is that the association between the model's center bone and leg IK bones is broken.

Check that your center bone and leg IK bones are properly set up.
