Trackdancer β€” MMD Tutorial on Chibi-sizing Motion Data by-nc-nd

Description Simple method on how to scale down motion data for use with chibi-sized models.

Important Note:
The figures I used are for demonstration purposes only, they cannot and should not be applied in all circumstances. You will need to make adjustments to match each individual model and motion data set. So for example, when I did my Chibi Music Class video, although all 5 chibis used the same motion, each one required a different set of adjustment ratios (well 4 of them did anyway, Chibi Zatsune Miku and Chibi Miku used the same ratios).

Additional Notes: courtesy of Kas97
1/. Nendoroids will need to use ratios of around 0.4:0.9 - see his her notes in the comments below for specific details
2/. A useful tool (software) for fine tuning motion data to fit a specific MMD model: http: //yumin3123.at.webry.info/200811/article_1.html

and how do you do about the camera please?

I made chibi model of hetalia from a rummy base

Ah, this one I know! You go to edit(D), and click on "select all camera frame(C)" to select the entire camera motion that's loaded. Then you go to edit again, and choose "multiply of camera frame position-angle(G)"; it'll pop up a tool that allows you to change the X, Y, and Z of the camera frames that are selected (in this instance, all of them.) So, for instance, when I use a chibi model and need to adjust the camera simply to be a little lower,Β  I'll put -5 (or -whatever number; it depends on how short the chibi is. When you have the coordinate axis showing on the screen, each square is worth 5) in the Y slot and apply it, and the camera will go lower by however much you lower it by.

If you have a tall model and need the camera to go up, use a positive number in the Y slot before applying it. If you need to go right or left overall, put a number in X; if you need the camera to get closer or further change the Z value.

I cannot tell you how much time knowing this has saved me; when I started trying to use MMD I thought you had to adjust every camera angle diamond by hand when you wanted to change the perspective to accommodate a different-sized model!

Camera motions especially for chibi performances have to be custom made. Can't explain how to do this in the space provided in these comments though, but it's not hard to do.

Well, it's a little bit out of date anyway so no biggy. Just do the adjustments manually.

Same principle as outlined in this tutorial should apply to that model. I don't have that model, but just compare her with another full size model with a similar build and should be able to guesstimate the correct ratio.

MaiKeehl In reply to ??? [2014-08-10 14:24:16 +0000 UTC]

Just a question with the Motion converter that you linked to... why do you need two different models with it? Is it like, "this one works with it and I need it to do the same with this one" type of thing or what?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Trackdancer In reply to MaiKeehl [2014-08-10 19:49:49 +0000 UTC]

Short answer - "YES"

Long answer - How the converter is supposed to work is that you first load the model on which the motion was developed and you use that as the point of reference to adjust the motion for the targeted model.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

namae-no-nai-uta In reply to Trackdancer [2014-09-11 19:56:15 +0000 UTC]

The only problem I see with the converter is what if the model the motion was originally made on isn't available for download or you otherwise cannot find it?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Trackdancer In reply to namae-no-nai-uta [2014-09-11 20:02:03 +0000 UTC]

Then do it by eye or find a variant of the original model (or one that's close to it in size/proportions). Honestly, I've never bothered with the converter. I just adjust things by eye as needed. When things 'derp' in a motion sequence, its pretty obvious, so you just have to get 'in there' and fix stuff. And it's a good practice as you'll learn a lot from having to get your hands dirty, so to speak.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

namae-no-nai-uta In reply to Trackdancer [2014-09-12 02:57:20 +0000 UTC]

I already do that. I spent three days adjusting the Eden motion for Charlie Aoyama's hi-poly Miku. Had to fix much, between her going through the ground to her hands going through her skirt and glitching it or her arms going through her head. Haha

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Trackdancer In reply to lore-mx [2014-07-20 21:18:49 +0000 UTC]

Yes there is - can't tell you what it is though as I don't have MMM anymore (too unstable on my system) but I do remember seeing the equivalent function in there.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

lore-mx In reply to Trackdancer [2014-07-21 05:41:05 +0000 UTC]

I'm pretty sure I found the function in MMM, but it didn't work. I did find out what was wrong with my computer and why I couldn't run MMD. So I will just use that for scaling motions.

hey I have a question I have a TDA model but those kinds of models are a little bit big so how can I fix it if the motion is for a dt Please can you help me

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Trackdancer In reply to Katherine-1208 [2014-06-20 20:44:14 +0000 UTC]

Just reverse the process described here. You can up-size motions too.

Katherine-1208 In reply to Trackdancer [2014-06-20 21:37:38 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much, an other question do you know what's the scale of TDA models?Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Trackdancer In reply to Katherine-1208 [2014-06-20 21:43:50 +0000 UTC]

Sorry I do not. I don't generally use Tda style models alongside models made by others (except Tda Chibi Miku Append).

Katherine-1208 In reply to Trackdancer [2014-06-20 22:02:35 +0000 UTC]

Ok Thank you so much again Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

namae-no-nai-uta [2014-06-07 05:02:19 +0000 UTC]

Another thing you can do, which is more time consuming, but works reliably without fail no matter what the model is to go through the motion and adjust everything by hand. Sometimes you need to do that to compensate for things like bust-size and clothing anyway, to make sure hands and arms are not glitching clothing and breasts, or to fix legs/feet that spaz out a bit when applying a motion.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Trackdancer In reply to namae-no-nai-uta [2014-06-08 21:01:16 +0000 UTC]

Yes you can do that, however, isn't it simpler to resize the entire motion first and then fix the segments that still glitch manually?

I'm not really sure what you're trying to say with this comment. Sorry to hear that this doesn't seem to be working for you, but really all this is, is simple maths.

Trackdancer In reply to MeiMemi [2014-06-06 17:58:51 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I've seen that before. Seems that some motions don't downsize well. I have a rough idea what causes it. Not sure that there's a fix for it.

PhantomPhan14 In reply to ??? [2014-04-08 06:04:34 +0000 UTC]

So, what's the difference between the position and angle boxes? Why do the angle areas need less scaling?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Trackdancer In reply to PhantomPhan14 [2014-04-15 22:20:54 +0000 UTC]

45 deg is 45 deg regardless of the size difference between the models. Position is where the bones end up being. This is anΒ absolute value rather than a relative value which is why you see the distortions on smaller models as the program tries to move the bones to the positions stated in the motion data. Which is why it's necessary to scale the motion data to fit the size of the model to which it is applied.
