Description
Update 12/09/08: I'm currently 40% done or so with the beginner's photoshop tutorial redex. It's like twice as awesome... I made some things a little clearer and especially focused made it even easier. I've found a lot more tips and hints and things over the years that are much better than the methods here. Of course this one still work, but I did overcomplicated a few things with this and the picture itself bugs me because it's old and not colored very well <<Continue to enjoy this one for now; I'll let you know when the new one is ready!
-------
Warning: HUGE picture! Make take awhile to load. For very slow computers, I'm sorry!
Yey! Here it is, finally! I've had this tutorial made for awhile but couldn't submit it until Kama got her present (since it uses her picture as an example). I hope you all find it very useful. I've made it as easy to follow as I possibly could and is geared toward beginners who know absolutely nothing about photoshop. This is the first of my tutorial series; I want to do more beginner's guide like animation with Flash and a more advanced photoshop tutorial and a special tutorial that will teach you how to use the "evil pen tool" (because it's REALLY helpful to know) and some other stuff. I donno when I'll be finishing them but look for them eventually k? And I will be re-doing this one to make it even better and easier. Enjoy!

I have Adobe Photoshop ImageReady, would this still work on it? Or do I need Adobe Photoshop?

Well, imageready isn't as powerful as photoshop so there might be a few things here and there that wouldn't work... but there is always more than one way to do things. You could give it a shot, I can't think of anything you wouldn't be able to do in imageready with my tutorial... except maybe a few effects you can add to your picture... yeah.

Welol done indeed! this should help anyone that wants to use photpshop. I do the coloring a litle differently in that I copy (useing select color range) the black lines to a clear layer, and add the multiply mode to it.

Thank you! I hope it becomes very helpful for lots of people... I find it harder to search for super beginner" tutorials so that's why I made this one. Yes, I mayself don't entirely do it this way, this is for super beginners and I'm just introducing some meathods you can use to color in photoshop. Yes, multiply is another way you can do it but I find that it can be a little tricky sometimes and then you end up screwing it all up.
But of course there is more than one way to do it, I just though this would be the simplest to do and it introduces you to many of the basic tools that are essential to know about. Ani does it a bit differently too... she puts all her different colors on seperate layers and then puts the highlights and shadows on the same layer. However you want to do it, go ahead if it works for you.

This is helpful.. but there's one thing I really don't understand. How did you manage to get the lines so smooth with just the brush tool? =/ Does it depend on what photoshop you have? Whenever I try to make any kind of line in photoshop with the brush tool, it always comes out jaggedy. XP

Tusami In reply to affy-hedgefoxbat [2006-08-12 00:03:23 +0000 UTC]
Yes, and that is because of 2 things:
TABLET!! omgwardiloveee and teh PEN TOOL (*gasp* dun dun DUN!!!!)
For this picture specifically... the school's tablets were used (I didn't have my own at the time) and no pen tool was used. I pretty much do the line over and over until I'm happy with it. But long semi-curvey lines, like tails and wings, I HAVE to use the pen tool. The pen tool is now my best friend because I figured out how to use it and I will be making a tutorial on how to use it. THen you can make pretty lines too! There have been pictures that I've photoshoped with the mouse (my older ones... example is like Tusami's Flight [link] omg it sucks <.=.< and had no knowledge of the pen tool, a tablet, or layers for that matter. You can see how horrible it is comapared to now
And of course, different versions of photoshop... I'm not sure if an older version would effect the smoothness of tools but quailtiy possibly. New versions replace old versions in looks, new tools and options, and bugs and errors in previous versions. You can do a whole lot more with later versions as apposed to older ones but smoothness.. I'd have to check for myself. What version of photshop do you use? Fo the tutorial I used the school's version of CS (I use CS2 at home) so it's very recent. Mostly it takes a lot of practice. I used a mouse for 5 years until I figured out what a tablet was so I know my way around a mouse... ball, lazer, touch pad, whatever. But tablets are SO much better... once you get used to them. At first your lines will be shakey, practice makes perfect and of course the pen tool is super perfection.
So I guess the next tutorial I should do would be the pen tool one... after I finish the imageready one that I'm already working on. Wow I made this message long . I think you get the point. Main point: PRACTICE! You can make pretty pictures with the mouse and no pen tool. Examples would be Anthro Taro, The Red Dragons Tusami, and Chibi Dragon Giftart. They still aren't perfect but you hardly notice. Yes I'm seriousely stopping now. Weee the end
