Description
Update 12/09/08: I'm currently 40% done or so with the beginner's photoshop tutorial redex. It's like twice as awesome... I made some things a little clearer and especially focused made it even easier. I've found a lot more tips and hints and things over the years that are much better than the methods here. Of course this one still work, but I did overcomplicated a few things with this and the picture itself bugs me because it's old and not colored very well <<Continue to enjoy this one for now; I'll let you know when the new one is ready!
-------
Warning: HUGE picture! Make take awhile to load. For very slow computers, I'm sorry!
Yey! Here it is, finally! I've had this tutorial made for awhile but couldn't submit it until Kama got her present (since it uses her picture as an example). I hope you all find it very useful. I've made it as easy to follow as I possibly could and is geared toward beginners who know absolutely nothing about photoshop. This is the first of my tutorial series; I want to do more beginner's guide like animation with Flash and a more advanced photoshop tutorial and a special tutorial that will teach you how to use the "evil pen tool" (because it's REALLY helpful to know) and some other stuff. I donno when I'll be finishing them but look for them eventually k? And I will be re-doing this one to make it even better and easier. Enjoy!

on DA, big pictures generally have to be downloaded; I guess so the browser doesnt crash on slow computers. Just click onto "Download image" on the right side to look at the tutorial

I don't have a tablet at the moment, but if I get one do I have to get a super expensive really cool one to be able to do this stuff or can I get just a normal one?

This is no help at all.
I know how to use CS3 but I can line the damn thing.
My hands shake when I draw or play games. I comes from built up stress. Plus my mouse is a piece of shit.
Would using a drawing tablet help with the lining?

Tusami In reply to Triptych91 [2009-02-09 07:56:07 +0000 UTC]
Yes, a tablet would help. But even with the mouse, you can learn how to use the pen tool to make beautiful lines. That's another tutorial I was going to work on in the future.

this wasnt very helpful since my sketch is on lined paper and I've got no skill in Photoshop whatsoever, so this shouldn't be for beginners but intermediate..no offence

Ah, an actual critique comment! Thank you, you're the first I think. Yes it is called a beginner's photoshop tutorial, but this does not teach you "how to color correctly", it teaches you how to transfer your knowledge of coloring traditionally to coloring digitally using photoshop.
So responding to your first point, it should not matter if your sketch is on lined paper vs any other kind of paper. You're re-drawing the lines anyways so I was wondering where you got stuck here.
I tried to design this tutorial with beginners who have never used photoshop in mind. I started off the tutorial explaining all the different panels and try to organize my steps in clear, simple directions. What did you not understand about it? Was there something you found confusing that I didn't explain very well? What can I do to improve my tutorial? I'm in the process of creating a much better, updated version of this beginner's coloring tutorial so I'd love to know what I can do to help. Thanks!

This is a very informative piece! Does photoshop come built in to the computer? I'm trying to make a deviant ID, but I don't know how.

Tusami In reply to Ryuzaki-san4172008 [2008-07-21 18:49:22 +0000 UTC]
Thank you! And no, I wish Photoshop came built-in... all you get is crappy paint. You're better off downloading a free program called Gimp. Photoshop goes for something like... I donno $500? You can also get Photoshop Elements for only $100. It's just like Photoshop but doesn't have as many features, you probably wouldn't miss them though since starting out you won't use them anyways.
