In regards to the downside where you say you need to use the calligraphy tool or create a new shape to create blotches of paint, you might be interested in the new paint bucket fill tool .

The latest SVN has improved on it further by allowing you to fill areas that aren't properly closed - great for colouring rough linework.

Yup! I've mentioned the fill bucket in later parts of this tutorial. However, it's in 0.46, and I'm assuming that people are using the 0.45 stable version for Now, so I only made a side note for it. 0.46 will probably only be released after the Summer of Code, so depending on your point of view it can be a while (I'm not about to tell people to "Start using Inkscape n... uh... 3 months from now! ). Heh.
