Description Wow, finally a clay tutorial! The first thing that was on my to-do list that I've actually completed. @__@ I know you guys have been asking for a tutorial for a while, so now you may know the secrets to how I make clay figurines, haha.

Why a llama? Well when I made my ones I realised that they were quite simple to make, and since a few of you guys (my watchers) had asked for a tutorial, I figured that a llama was a good way to go, easy and very deviantart-y.

Why foil? It makes your figurine lighter, faster to bake and you use less clay.

Clarification: To soften clay you can work it with your fingers, like massage it etc.

Remember, the tutorial goes from left to right, not down. n_n;
I hope you guys find this useful! It really could be used to any animal. This is the technique I use for ALL of my clay creations, so yeah, just adapt it to your needs.

Other Tutorials (including how to make a cape for your llama):

Here are some of my deviations showing them completed!

Can't wait to see your llamas! Please show me what you do! If you do give me a link, I'll post it here so others can admire your llamas too!

As a mini sculpture artist, I find the use of foil to be a cheap way to get the shape without trying too hard. Congrats on the DD but I don't think it's deserving. Especially so soon. There are thousands of other images [and tutorials] more worthy that have been on the site wasting away for months and years getting overlooked.

yingmakes In reply to AnotherJamesDean [2010-09-13 06:30:30 +0000 UTC]

Well, I didn't suggest this to be a DD! I just logged on one day and saw that I had a DD. If you feel that way you could comment the GM or something..

And it's much more efficient to use foil in the center in so many ways. Time to sculpt, time to bake, cost of clay etc. It's also a common thing to do for larger scale projects, why not smaller scale ones?

And as suggested by others, go and suggest those deviations as DDs! I have done so myself, and I've only ever suggested two deviations, one of which DID get a DD! So it really isn't that hard.. especially with the aid of add ons and stuff.

Stock-By-Crystal In reply to AnotherJamesDean [2010-09-13 04:42:38 +0000 UTC]

Honestly, if you really think there are better deviations out there worthy of a DD, then maybe you should go out of your way to suggest them, or even feature them yourself, if you haven't done so already.

Also, I'm not sure if you're aware, but the foil is a good tool to use because it helps you get the proper shape you want without having to waste any clay possibly, and it also fires faster when the foil heats up and since the middle is "hollow".

You really should just keep your negative comments to yourself, unless you have some sort of critique to give to them that may be useful. Otherwise it's just a waste of time and makes you look rude.

You're Welcome.

I find it hard to believe that noone else has tried it...this was the first time I've made anything out of clay, and although parts were somewhat challenging for a first-timer (like actually softening the clay) it was fun and didn't take too long.

I made a white lama with purple streaks and a purple cape ^_^
