Paint Tool Sai mostly, and some Photoshop for special effects as needed.

This tutorial is great and the picture is beautiful. Question, though - did you add the textures for the wings in Photoshop?

Wow, I'm really impressed you noticed that, the texture is barely visible on my screen. xD
I believe that I used Photoshop for that, yes. I usually use Paint Tool SAI for the main coloring and then add "special effects" like textures or color adjustments in Photoshop afterwards.

Very good tutorial. I was wondering how you get your shading/coloring done like that. Do you set all your colors in the skin 1st? Like all those color palletes and then use the water tool?

a-l-m In reply to DelaySix [2010-08-22 23:13:14 +0000 UTC]
Thank you. :3 And yep, that is what I do! I put the colors on with a solid brush on top of the base color layer (i.e., SKIN), and then blend them together using the Watercolor tool.
I am working to improve my coloring style and one day I will make a more detailed coloring tutorial. Hopefully I can learn enough to help other people learn too! ^^

i still need to practice with SAI
somehow that inking is one of the most annoying states...
It doesn't look much better then the sketch, and is much easyer on real paper with pen^^'
i use the ink note layer or how its called, wich got a bit like vektor arts.
easyer to bring the strokes in the righ form.

When I started inking on the computer, it was really difficult because I wasn't used to the pen tablet. The lines kept coming out squiggly. XD But they will get smoother with practice, learning to use the pen is like learning to use a completely different tool (and it is!) Just keep practicing! ^_^ If you are using a mouse, I'd recommend vector lines like you said.

Aww, thanks.. I kinda think this tutorial sucks.. LOL. One day I'll make a better one! *w* I hope this was at least a little helpful though, hehe. Right now this is the only one. But I definitely want to post some step-by-steps or mini-tutorials soon. ^^

when you do your shading, do you shade in the same layer that the base color is in? What setting do you have the waterbrush at?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
a-l-m In reply to lady-cybercat [2010-08-13 16:20:16 +0000 UTC]
I either put the base layer on "Opacity Lock" or create a new masked layer above it. That way I won't be coloring outside the fill I've already created. ^^
I have the waterbrush tool at defaults, in SAI I find the option sliders kind of confusing. I don't mess around with 'em much. XD I need to study them more.. hehe. If you want to make a new Watercolor Tool, right click on an empty box and select "Watercolor" and it will create a new brush with the defaults for watercolor.

Man, if I had known you could make that kind of stuff by crocheting I would've stayed in the Crochet Club for more than one week. LOL. You should make a panda! And sell them on Etsy!
