A cheap but very effective weapon, indeed an excellent design.

It was still used as a personal defense weapon for tank, APC, and helicopter crewmen until it was replaced by the M4 Carbine in the 2000s (Fun fact- the M4A1, which is a shorter and lighter version of an M16, is now the primary service weapon of the US Armed Forces.)

Lightness and practicality have won,
although with a FAL - quite an M14 in 7.62 NATO - I felt
at ease.

My father used the BAR during his army service in the ETO and has told me soldiers using it would sometimes not deploy the biped support because German soldiers could thus easily recognize it - and its users.

If I remember what my father told me correctly, the German counterpart to the BAR had a tripod support at the front.

If you don't mind me asking, What kind of firearms are you allow to own as a citizen of your country?
In my country of Palau, private citizens are not allowed to posses any type firearms or ammunition, only our national police and U.S. Military are allowed to possess and use firearms.
The closet equivalents that we are allowed to own privately are Pellet/Airsoft guns and paintball guns.

You are very welcome.
We have two kind of licence, one for collecting or sporting use, in the case of sports use you can leave the house with the weapon
to go hunting or to go to practice at the shooting range.
Then there is the special licence that allows you to go around with a gun, it is given only for special reasons.
Then it's forbidden to have 9x17 parabellum or 7.62x51 or 5.56x45 nato ammo.

I don't mean to be an ass, but, some critiques on your description:
Although the Garand was a massive success, it's not actually that light (often considered heavy in fact), and the action is very open and even a pinch of sand in it will cause it to jam. Soldiers were actually trained to fall with their hand over the action to try and keep stuff out of it. It did good work though.
The BAR wasn't useless because of the Garand, LMG's are incredibly useful things even today, it was useless because it sucked. It kicked like a b**ch, it was WAY to heavy (15lbs if you were "lucky" and got an M1918, 19lbs if you got an M1918A2), the bipods where annoying (they swing 360 degrees around the barrel and there isn't a lock for that), 20 rounds was to low of a capacity, it was a bit awkward to use, and it was basically obsolete by WWII. All the other countries that had BAR's in the inter-war years heavily updated them. All except for the US, all we did was make it even heavier.
The M1 Carbine made its way to plenty of front line troops who actually preferred it to the Garand, likely because of the lighter weight and smaller size, combined with things like higher ammo capacity and lighter recoil from the smaller cartridge (30 Carbine).
The M3 is called the Grease Gun, and soldiers where not reluctant to replace the Thompson, in fact here watch this: www.youtube.com/watch?v=dlM-aj…
And, just because, here's a video on the Johnson LMG as well: www.youtube.com/watch?v=vf40tH…
And that's all I've got for now. Please don't think I'm trying to insult you, I love your stuff it's great, I just wanted to critique your description and some potential discrepancies in it.

The BAR was not useless, far from it. The Marines in WW2 and later in Korea put them to good use. They based their squads around 3 fireteams each with a M1918 BAR. This gave the Marine riflesquad large amounts of firepower and mobility. In addition in the assault, the BAR's lighter weight (compared to the M1919 Browning which weighted 30 lbs.) allowed for easier movement. Also while the 20 round magazine was a bit on the low end, the squad had 3 of them which means the squad could implement a tactic called 'talking guns'. While one fireteam suppresses the other reloads, or lets their weapon cool. Also changing magazines is much faster then reloading a belt fed machine gun, also with a 100 or 200 round belt, you have to swap out the barrel all these a re very slow processes. The BAR was such a popular idea that they essentially combined it with the M1 Garand to make the M14. While the M14 didn't work too well in the squad automatic weapon role, the US Military still likes the idea of a lighter, magazine fed squad automatic weapon ei. the Colt Light Machinegun, XM8, and the M27 IAR.

I just said it was an old design, not an useless weapon, maybe a real LMG with a removable barrel would be better.
But of course every army makes its best with what he owns, and every American's infantry company had a mortars support platoon, and the rich and perfect logistics made sure that soldiers never miss bullets and bombs at their will.

Never mind, a civil debate is always most welcome.
Well, maybe I'm a little biased, the Garand had been a part of my shadow for a whole year, in the early 80' it was still issued to the Italian artillery soldier, yes heavier than a bolt rifle, but you can fire 8 shot in a breath, and refill it in a blink, and the weight was just a little disturbing during present'arm, and semi-automatic rifles are always heavier than bolt ones, they have two barrel and the piston.
The BAR had no replaceable barrel, and it was not advisable to shoot bursts longer than 5 strokes, otherwise the barrel would overheat, a Garand with a longer magazine, say an M14 or a FAL, could almost replace it.
M1 was used on the frontline mostly in the jungle, it was not more powerful than a Colt M1911, no match in the medium-long distance respect a real rifle.
I read that the M1 was preferred to the M3 because the two row magazine was quite prone to jam.

Double stack mags can cause problems if they aren't made well, but the M3 had a good reputation. Also, I never said the Garand was bad it is a great rifle, just not light. And that's cool Italy still had Garands in service in the 80's.
