Did you paint the face pure white? Or light gray?

Is the glaze you used any specific brand? Because I used Modge Podge for some phone charms and they're all sticky now.... :/

I use americana duraclear gloss varnish on my sculptures and it works fine. mod podge just makes everything sticky.

i don't remember! i left it at my parents' house. it doesn't really matter, though, as long as it isn't puff paint or something.

and if doe suede is really hard to get, what would you say would be a good enough substitute? I'm guessing felt would work, but if there's something better than that, what would you recommend?

I'm just trying to get a couple of these done for Christmas ^_^" I'm a bit behind lol

b00ts In reply to lakoneko [2011-12-20 05:58:39 +0000 UTC]

suedecloth, maybe? my store doesn't sell a lot of colors either, so i have to buy most of my fabric online. i definitely wouldn't recommend felt for anything but the hair. if you have to you can use fleece! i would resize the pattern so it's bigger if you're going to do that, though. fleece is too thick for stuff this small.

lol alright ^_^ thanks. I found some white deersuede on a website for pretty cheap, so I guess I'll just wait and not worry about getting it done by christmas, which is ok. It's the thought that counts in the end ^^

Thanks a lot!

Where did you get your doe suede from? the major crafts stores in my city don't seem to carry it.

b00ts In reply to lakoneko [2011-12-20 02:47:37 +0000 UTC]

that's just a specific brand, i think. there's also alova and other things like it. i think some types of microsuede work too? i would just go through the suedes they have and check to see if they ravel at all. if they don't, then that's what you're looking for.

lakoneko In reply to b00ts [2011-12-20 02:54:46 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! when I checked the store, they didn't have the right colors anyway ^_^"" kinda sad selection. maybe I'll find somewhere else

i can try! i can't promise it'll be the best, though. his hair's a bit different in that it might not look as good the way i normally do homestuck hair.

this is probably weird, but please reply back so i don't forget to do this, haha.

Where would be a good place to find those transfer sheets? Do you have to use them on your own printer, or do office supply stores have that kind of option too?

As well- How far down do you connect the head to the body without it looking odd? I tried doing John earlier and the head came out rather.. wonky looking, even after I placed him still. It's a proto-plush so no biggie, but.. I want to know what I did wrong. ((Otherwise thank you for the tutorial, its saving my life. xD ))

b00ts In reply to TheMockingCrows [2011-12-19 03:50:35 +0000 UTC]

I think if you bring the sheets in to an office supply store they might let you use it? I'm not sure! But you do have to buy them yourself. I get them at fabric stores like Joann and Hancock as well as general craft stores like Michael's. They might have some at an office supply store but I'm not sure. Be careful not to buy the regular t-shirt transfer paper.

Iiii don't know how to explain that exactly. I tend to put them fairly high up. If you look at the sprites (and the backs of the sprites that you can find in some panels) it's not very far down on the body at all. Maybe take a look at where I've put the heads on mine to see where would be good? You can always take the stitches out and reposition it.

Mn, alright, I'll look into that. I asked about the supply store because my printer is... well.. a cheap SOB that likes to be rude to things I place in it aside from scanning.

And yes, that's what I'm doing now. They didn't turn out too different in position. John just kept being a derp and letting his head twist for some reason.. But again, thank you for the photos! The mystery of "Why The Feet Looked Like Crap When I Made Them" has now been cleared up.

b00ts In reply to TheMockingCrows [2011-12-19 04:03:42 +0000 UTC]

I've had that problem myself! The cotton sheets are pretty finicky, so even with a good printer sometimes you'll get little white lines through things. I'd definitely ask a copy store if they can print it for you. Otherwise, maybe printing it on gloss or matte photo paper at the copy store and hot gluing it on will work. I've never tried, myself.

Yeah, it's really hard to keep the head straight while you're sewing. I put pins through the back of the body and straight into the head, as well as some pins in the front to try to keep it straight while working on it. A couple of safety pins might work, too.

Hmn. I was just worried about the stitches showing up mostly. No matter what I did it kept sticking out glaringly obvious. D:

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

b00ts In reply to TheMockingCrows [2011-12-19 04:18:42 +0000 UTC]

By sticking out, do you mean even if you pulled them tight? I think the only way to circumvent that is to hold the head loosely onto the body and see where it touches without a lot of pressure, and only put the stitches inside that area. It's a pretty hard thing to do with lots of problems that can pop up. :\

ewe I'll say.. It's just one of the things I'll have to learn through practice to get better at.
