Description It's pretty clear, looking at the many websites dedicated to it, that the Eagle Transporter is a design that is very important to a lot of people. Some would go as far to say it is one of the greatest spacecraft ever designed and it is a testament to Brian Johnson and his team that it has endured so long. With the slow, but i'm assured, still ongoing processes of bringing Space 1999 (now 2099) back to the small screen, there lies the question, will the Eagle be given an overhaul?

I have seen a lot of alternate Eagle concepts such as the proposed 2010 movie design and the early preproduction posters for the upcoming show and these have been met with contempt amongst a lot of fans. It's pretty clear that many people wont accept anything less than the unaltered original.

Though I am very open to change and would love to see more Eagle redesigns out there, I too have a soft spot for the design and wouldn't really change much. That said I figured I'd give it a radical overhaul anyway (for the lols, and for a small upcoming project). Instead of re-designing the craft I dialled it back a couple of years instead, essentially creating a "prototype version". This version replaces much of what we know with current N.A.S.A tech and addresses some of the problems that designers have talked about when discussing the Eagle ( Fuel storage, cockpit space, atmospheric flight etc.)

This prototype was developed during the construction of Moonbase Alpha, specifically to ferry materials from the Space-Dock to the Moon and replace the inefficient "Lander" fleet. It is designed only for Space and Lunar travel and cannot re-enter Earth atmosphere. The command module is larger but is the only pressurised area of the craft. At the back is only 3 boosters compared to the normal 4 (a nod to Mike Noble's comic designs). The fuel and a series of vertical boosters are located at the fore and aft of the cargo section. The 8 main batteries which power the crafts electronics are located on the command module and can easily be swapped and recharged.

These first Eagles where probably mostly cannibalised when developing the current model. You can view the first test flights of the 2nd generation Eagle here [link] .

As a quick note, I have never really let science elements in design bother me too much, while the Eagle probably wouldn't work in reality in quite the way the show intended, that dosn't take away from how great a design it is (after all its a show about the moon visiting other planets) my favourite designers tred the line between the fantastical and the realistic in order to create something thats exciting but believable. The more realistic approach in this case was more for a bit of fun.

So What do you think? Did I do her justice? Are you on your way to kill me in my sleep?

I love Space 1999, well at least until they got strange in the later episodes, I still recall seeing the first episode back in 1973, to me Moonbase Alpha and the Eagle are so realistic that Nasa or some private firm could still be planing to use them when we get back to the moon.

That said this piece of art is so realistic it could have been a picture taken at a secret moon installation right now.

I love the angle of the view point.

My only critique would be that the the sky is missing stars, but that could be explained away with dust.

So overall I love this picture e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="391" title=" (Smile)"/>

Really neat extrapolation of SPACE: 1999's design aesthetic. Reminds me of the Swift from "Brian the Brain".

Your rendering here is exceptionally great!

One thing I'd love to see in a redesigned Eagle would be a more logical and aerodyamic space/air- craft. I think elements of the original Eagle and Swift could help do this, with some other adaptations.

The nose would be very different, much like to perforated nose of the real-life Space Ship One, so that the pilot(s) could have a much better view of where they're flying. Maybe there could be retractable landing gear as well. Just some thoughts.

Thanks , I think if you wanted an aerodynamic craft it would probably need wings for atmospheric flight which would be a pretty big departure from the classic eagle.

Would still be interested in seeing it though.

Cheers, I don't remember hearing of a "Falcon" during the series, haven't seen all of series 2 yet though.

the only time I heard of the Falcon shuttle was in the "Official Moonbase Alpha tech readout" which I still have my copy, I sent for from Starlog magazine.

I think you got the right balance between a new modern look, still looking like the original, and it looking like it could be a real ship. Very cool.

I think this is a very interesting take on the Eagle space craft. I like it a lot better than a few other Eagle redesigns I've seen.Β  I do still like the classic Eagle design, and it is a hard one to redesign and still have it be an Eagle. While it still may not be fully realistic and workable, I still think it is among the better and more realistic TV/Movie spacecraft out there, and even if the show or it's premise don't hold up or make sense (to me it never really did in the first place, but I love it anyway. ) the Eagle and associated Hawk craft still work to me and still look as cool and as modern as ever. I think if the show everΒ really does get redone and reworked, I do think the Eagle should look as much like the original as possible, even if virtually every thing else gets changed or worked over. Your ship here certainly fits and would be a great addition to any version of SPACE:1999.Β  Even if later more advanced or different versions of the Eagle come into play in any reworked/reimagined version, I still think the original Eagle should be there in some way or capacity and any new designs shouldn't stray too far from the basic body plan. Would you agree with all this?

This is a great back-dating of this iconic sf spacecraft, and does not look out of place in the S99 universe. Nice tribute to the Noble three-engined version, too... it actually looks correct in this context.
I'd seen the Eagle prototype launch video before, but it still makes me laugh out loud, especially the one that explodes on the pad for no apparent reason (just after the pilot's sigh of relief).

This is stunning, in my opinion. I love the small enhancements and changes you've made, as they serve only to strengthen and highlight the brilliance of the original design. In the TV show, it always bagged me that the Eagles entered planetary atmospheres, as they simply wouldn't survive the experience. When looking at the original design, it always seemed to me that the cockpit module could have been adapted as an emergency re-entry vehicle, and your design definitely has that feel to it. All in all, I love this work.

I always like to see what artists do with classic designs, this is a very nice job. It fits in with the Swift and Eagle look really well. I like the 'flying bedstead' look of it. It has the look of a 'workhorse' like those Russian helicopters with the long legs

Great idea here, 2 questions
How does the crew get in/out of cabin?
would there be a version for atmosphere flight or is that for a different craft?

I myself have always moaned at the size of the cabin & the recesses in the underside(for airing their legs maybe )

Chrisofedf In reply to LordTigeron [2013-07-03 23:25:49 +0000 UTC]

Cheers

Through the floor at the rear of the command module via foldable ladder, theres a pressurise-able airlock section the cabin also has escape hatches.

Possibly, but this one is a little to flimsy. Something not unlike the Space shuttle or a space plane. Enough to reach the space dock.
